I get to do what I love because of this community, so giving back felt like a responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began as a small idea has now grown into an annual campaign that Smith says he can\u2019t imagine stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the start, I was pretty naive. I didn\u2019t think it was going to become a four-year thing. However, some places of giving are mandatory, according to him, like schools and the food bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe food bank is always the first one. That\u2019s such a basic need, and there\u2019s always need there. I always go to the principals at local schools and ask them directly where the need is, instead of me deciding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the campaign, Smith makes a point of sharing specific ways people can help, whether that\u2019s donating, volunteering or dropping off supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he\u2019s quick to downplay his own role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI get to show up with the cheque and have the fun. But they\u2019re doing the work all year long. There\u2019s so much quiet, impactful work happening that people don\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 12 organizations featured in year 4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sackville Food Bank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sackville Minor Hockey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Port Elgin Regional School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dorchester Consolidated School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tantramar Community Association (Christmas Cheer)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2nd Sackville Girl Guides<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PEDVAC \u2013 Port Elgin &amp; District Volunteer Action Committee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marshview Middle School (Tech &amp; Skilled Trades Program)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nursing Homes Without Walls \u2013 Strait Shores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Salem Elementary School (Music Program)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tantramar Regional High School (Food for Thought Program &amp; Titan Pantry)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A growing level of need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On other days, Smith says he faced some of the more sobering realities of need in the community. After four years, Smith says the biggest thing he\u2019s learned isn\u2019t tied to one moment or story, but to the scale of need across the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe level of need is overwhelming. In a community that seems well off on the surface, there\u2019s a huge amount of deep need that people don\u2019t see.&#8221; he said, &#8220;So when you meet with some of these groups, it does take your breath away a little bit of how much need there actually is in a seemingly well off community.
