Emily Falvey is director and curator of the Owens. She describes 2026 as a calmer year operationally, with a return to core programming and longer-range planning. I spoke to her during the setup of the most recent exhibit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"857d69\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #857d69;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-1280x960.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72388 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-1280x960.avif 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-600x450.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-768x576.avif 768w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-1536x1152.avif 1536w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-2048x1536.avif 2048w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_134802-1320x990.avif 1320w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Emily Falvey, director at Owens Art Gallery | Photo: Clinton Davis\/CHMA News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going back to our regular rhythm of exhibitions and we\u2019re doing some planning and getting ready for upcoming exhibitions over the next cycle of four years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hear the story below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/JAN-14-2025-OWENS.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year\u2019s schedule demanded long lead times and major partnerships with some projects in development for almost half a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe programs that we realized last year, some of them we\u2019d been working on for five years or more.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Falvey recalled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/rediscovering-bannister-at-the-owens-new-brunswicks-forgotten-art-legend\/\">Edward Mitchell Bannister exhibition<\/a> that has recently wrapped at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/owens-art-gallery-marks-130-years-with-reflection-and-celebration\/\">our anniversary in May, the 130th<\/a>, and we also had a major exhibition in the fall called <em>Art Equals Work<\/em>, which was part of a partnership with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that busy year behind them, the Owens opens its first exhibition of 2026 on Friday, Jan. 16, with <em>Dawn MacNutt: Timeless Forms<\/em> &#8211; the final stop of a touring retrospective organized with MSVU Art Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dawn MacNutt: Timeless Forms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MacNutt, a Mount Allison graduate and senior artist originally from Nova Scotia, reflects the Owens\u2019 long-standing relationship with university alumni, and was working with materials and processes well before they became widely used in contemporary practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe is a bit of a groundbreaker in terms of her use of materials, sourcing materials from nature and using local willow and other plant materials to make her work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"aa9e8a\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #aa9e8a;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1280\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-1280x1280.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72389 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-1280x1280.avif 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-600x600.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-300x300.avif 300w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-768x768.avif 768w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-1536x1536.avif 1536w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-2048x2048.avif 2048w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260113_135459-1320x1320.avif 1320w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Emily Falvey describes Dawn MacNutt&#8217;s work at Owens Art Gallery | Photo: Clinton Davis \/ CHMA News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Falvey continued, \u201cThat type of work is common right now. But she was doing it in the 70s and definitely laying the groundwork for that. There\u2019s work here from the 70s, 80s, and 90s and she\u2019s still making work, including her most recent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Falvey, MacNutt&#8217;s work spans decades and materials, including sculptural forms woven from willow and later cast in bronze. The exhibition was co-curated with Melanie Colissimo, MSVU Art Gallery director, also a Mount Allison grad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s almost 90 at this point. She\u2019s been present for all of them and has done artist talks. She\u2019s supposed to be here for the opening this Friday at 7 pm, but the weather might make it difficult for her to drive up from Dartmouth, which is where she\u2019s living right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dawn MacNutt: Timeless Forms<\/em> runs at the Owens until mid-May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sweetest Little Thing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, the Owens shifts from exhibition opening to community fundraiser mode with <em>The Sweetest Little Thing<\/em>, a long-running Valentine\u2019s Day event co-hosted with Struts Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Sweetest Little Thing, our annual fundraiser with Struts, is happening on the 14th and the artworks in the auction will be on display the week before.\u201d Falvey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event includes an art auction, a best-dressed competition, karaoke, and, as always, Rice Krispy squares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the festivities, Falvey said the fundraiser stands out because it represents a rare, long-running collaboration between two arts organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not common. I don\u2019t know any other place where that happens. So to my mind, it\u2019s a really brilliant example of the great arts community that Sackville has.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Falvey said the partnership has roots stretching back nearly 30 years, with proceeds split evenly between the Owens and Struts to support programming at both galleries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a partnership that\u2019s been going on for almost 30 years, definitely over 20.
