{"id":7261,"date":"2020-11-23T19:10:04","date_gmt":"2020-11-23T23:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=7261"},"modified":"2020-12-12T08:13:08","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T12:13:08","slug":"horizon-health-network-says-they-are-on-high-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/horizon-health-network-says-they-are-on-high-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Horizon Health Network says they are on &#8220;high alert&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/horizon.png\" alt=\"Horizon Health Network Logo\" class=\"wp-image-7263\" width=\"587\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/horizon.png 334w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/horizon-300x93.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><figcaption>President and CEO of Horizon Health, Karen McGrath, spoke with members of the media on Monday (image: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.horizonnb.ca\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Horizon<\/a>). <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Horizon-Health-Update.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CHMA attended a media conference with the president and CEO of Horizon Health Network, Karen McGrath, on Monday (November 23).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following is information collected from said conference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enhanced visitor restrictions are in place in orange regions.\u00a0More details are available <a href=\"https:\/\/en.horizonnb.ca\/home\/patients-and-visitors\/coronavirus-(covid-19)\/covid-19-visitor-restrictions-at-hospitals-and-health-care-facilities.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGrath says the \u201centire health system is now on high alert, and our hospitals are closely reviewing their contingency planning.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of today, Horizon is not cancelling elective surgeries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, New Brunswick has not seen an increase of clinical staff, especially nurses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of noon on Monday, 64 Horizon staff are self-isolating.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGrath explains that covering the missing staff involves \u201credeploy[ing] staff to other areas in the hospital,\u201d which can result in closing other services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staffing is determined \u201chour by hour,\u201d to ensure that critical resources such as the ICU are functioning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGrath says that the worker affected in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/covid-update-new-outbreak-in-fredericton-weekend-case-numbers\/\"> Stan Cassidy Centre<\/a> for Rehabilitation did not work in other health care settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less people are going to the emergency room, which McGrath says is a cause for concern.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decrease is \u201cslight,\u201d but McGrath says that during the first wave of COVID-19, a number of people with \u201ctrue emergencies\u201d did not come due to COVID-19 concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says \u201cthe next few days and weeks are critical to our health care system, we could easily be overwhelmed with\u00a0very few new cases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explains that a number of beds are always occupied by people who are not COVID-19 positive, with three to five beds available per facility in the ICU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For context, Horizon has five regional facilities in New Brunswick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore \u201cseven or eight people being admitted in a very short time in addition to everybody else&#8230;could impact the system, and [they] could be overwhelmed really quickly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event of the healthcare system being overwhelmed, McGrath says the first thing that would happen is the cancellation of elective surgeries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHMA attended a media conference with the president and CEO of Horizon Health Network, Karen McGrath, on Monday (November 23).&nbsp;
