Owen describes themself as a non-binary (he\/they\/she) artist, historian and writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hear the story below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/JAN-23-2026.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re in Sackville for the opening, marking their first time in Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve never been to anywhere around here, so it\u2019s kind of exciting to see Sackville. It\u2019s a really picturesque small town. I really enjoy the streets. People are also very friendly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition is also Owen&#8217;s first solo show outside of their home city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is my first solo exhibition outside of Calgary, so it\u2019s a big leap to come all the way to Sackville from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A follow-up show called Dirty Picture II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owen\u2019s exhibition is titled Dirty Picture II. They described it as a follow-up to an earlier show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy show is called Dirty Picture II. It\u2019s the follow-up exhibition to my first exhibition called Dirty Picture I,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project explores queerness, memory and the risks of romanticizing the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s this way of examining queer nostalgia and looking at the falseness and complexities of romanticizing that period of time, as well as making something that is an intimate space for people to enter into.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"8182a2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8182a2;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"952\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/01.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73219 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/01.avif 1200w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/01-600x476.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/01-768x609.avif 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dirty Pictures I | Submitted by Ryan Owen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working with archives and \u201ccompositions of removal\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of Owen\u2019s recent work comes from a long-running conceptual approach that began with found materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI started doing a series called Rubbings, where I took found gay porn magazines that had been given to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work became a way to think about history and loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was all about looking at history as something that\u2019s fading or passing us,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That approach later expanded into installation pieces designed to exist for a limited time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose installation pieces were temporal spaces that would only exist for the three-month period, and then they would be gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Censorship and the challenge of showing the work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owen has faced challenges showing work with queer themes, particularly in Alberta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"737f86\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #737f86;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"721\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-1280x721.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73183 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-1280x721.avif 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-600x338.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-768x432.avif 768w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-1536x865.avif 1536w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-2048x1153.avif 2048w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122_144536-1-1320x743.avif 1320w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously challenges, of course,\u201d they said. \u201cI\u2019ve faced a lot of censorship, a lot of removal of my work.
