Since then, planning work has focused on understanding the condition of the structure and what repairs will be needed over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul Henderson is the director of Struts Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe building is built in 1912 actually. So it\u2019s over a hundred years old. We\u2019ve been in this building since 1996 and we were able to buy it in 2018. We\u2019ve been doing feasibility studies and getting engineering assessments and a lot of quotes to conduct a major retrofit of the building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning renovations without closing doors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henderson says the goal has been to plan carefully, so early repairs do not limit future options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re kind of like trying to create a modular, step-by-step list of priorities and work that we\u2019re able to do that won\u2019t essentially paint us into a corner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past several years, Struts has worked with architects and engineers to identify what needs to be addressed first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the last five years, we\u2019ve really pushed the project forward,&#8221; says Henderson, &#8220;We\u2019ve worked with a variety of architects and engineers to develop plans for the building and assess what\u2019s here and what are priorities in terms of structural things that need to get fixed. We\u2019re hoping to raise $75,000 by this spring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No emergency yet, but time matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henderson says the building is not currently unsafe, but delaying repairs could create future problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s stable and structurally sound. There doesn\u2019t seem to be any major issues but it is getting worse. Five to 10 years will become closer to an emergency, so we\u2019ll have to deal with some of those problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A long-running Valentine\u2019s tradition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the fundraising effort includes <em>Sweetest Little Thing<\/em>, an annual Valentine\u2019s fundraiser held in partnership with the Owens Art Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a60e41\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a60e41;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"719\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2dd15e_2e86631ab7fd4d9087642d973e7e9d93mv2.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73912 has-transparency\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2dd15e_2e86631ab7fd4d9087642d973e7e9d93mv2.avif 740w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2dd15e_2e86631ab7fd4d9087642d973e7e9d93mv2-600x583.avif 600w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Sweetest Little thing online auction starts Feb 6, with the event date set for Feb 14 | Image source: strutsgallery.ca<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSweetest Little Thing is our annual fundraising art auction and sort of gala event up at the Owens Art Gallery. It happens on Valentine\u2019s Day every year. It\u2019s been going on almost 30 years and it is unique in that it\u2019s two spaces and two galleries working together to do one fundraiser in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the fundraiser works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fundraiser includes an online and in-person auction, featuring work donated by artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe usually get about a hundred artists who donate artworks for that. So it\u2019s an online and in person auction so people can bid from all over the world and we will ship the artwork to them, but then you can also bid in person at the event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henderson says the artwork can also be viewed in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can see it all online and then the exhibition is open at the Owens Art Gallery to the public as well. So you can go up and walk around and see all the works in person, which I highly encourage you to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More than an auction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Valentine\u2019s Day event is designed to be social and community-focused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd over the course of the night, there\u2019s a variety of activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have karaoke, a sort of pie in the face competition, 50-50 draw, a photo booth.
