Parts of Atlantic Canada are under severe wind and rain warnings today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some areas of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick could see 50 to 60 millimetres of rain starting this afternoon and into Tuesday with the highest totals along the Fundy and Atlantic coasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Newfoundland, parts of the south coast are under wind and rain warnings with up to 100 millimetres expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Snowfall warnings have been issued for parts of Labrador with up to 20 centimetres expected in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Liberals in New Brunswick are expected to deliver their 2026-27 budget tomorrow in Fredericton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province\u2019s finance minister revealed last month that the government was on track to post a record deficit of $1.3-billion dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Premier Susan Holt has asked all government departments to come up with ways to cut spending by 10 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Health-care is the biggest driver of expenses and Holt says it will not be exempt from cost-cutting efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-MUN-Cuts)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The faculty association at Newfoundland and Labrador\u2019s only university is raising the alarm about proposed cuts to contract teaching positions in mathematics and statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Memorial University is struggling with a deficit of more than 24-million dollars, and its faculty association is asking the province to step in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The association claims the school plans to double class sizes for some first-year math courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spokesperson for the school says that is not true, though the university acknowledges that class sizes will be larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They said larger class sizes do not automatically reduce academic quality, and the university will provide support through peer tutoring, teaching assistants and its math help centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The business school at Cape Breton University is launching three new graduate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The university is offering new master’s programs in artificial intelligence, digital marketing and health care leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
University president David Dingwall says the programs will help strengthen Cape Breton\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Applications are now open for fall 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Water-Rates)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A water utility in Cape Breton has asked for a rate hike, driven by increasing costs and the possibility of supplying a proposed green hydrogen project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iaian Langley with the Landrie Lake Water Utility told C-B-C News that EverWind Fuels needs a lot of water for its proposed hydrogen plant and the utility is willing to provide it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says the company is expected to draw up to 10 million litres a day from the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s one-third the amount that can be taken without harming the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the utility’s rate hike application is approved, existing industrial users will pay between 16 and 23 per cent more for water starting in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(PEI-River-Otter)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A river otter mascot named Rivv will represent P-E-I’s Town of Three Rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The town council announced the new mascot last week, saying it was chosen from more than 15 submissions from residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
River otters are native to P-E-I and were thought to have died out in the early 1900s, but they seem to be making a comeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dorothy MacDonald, the town’s community services manager, says Rivv will be playful, wise and knowledgeable, and she hopes his costume will be ready this summer. (CBC Prince Edward Island)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
