Hicks spoke about a need for more fairness in service delivery between former local service districts and more urban areas in Tantramar, and the importance of rural concerns in council decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Listen to the audio below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/barry-hicks-interview-edit.wav\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This interview has been edited for clarity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200aMy name is Barry Hicks and I&#8217;m reoffering as councillor for Ward 2 in the upcoming Tantramar municipal election. I was born and raised in British Settlement-Westcock area of Ward 2 and I have proudly called this community home for all of my 69 years. My wife Rhonda and I have a blended family of four children and eight grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, I retired from the town of Sackville after more than 40 years in the public works department. I worked as a heavy equipment operator for 20 years before joining the management team, where I served as superintendent of public works for the remainder of my career. Through this experience, I gained a sense of knowledge of the municipal government, particularly in infrastructure and operations. I am eager to continue lending that experience to the residents of Ward 2 and the entire Tantramar community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What made you want to run in this year\u2019s municipal election?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200aI decided to run for municipal council in Ward 2 when the provincial government introduced municipal reform. It was important to me that the local service districts (LSDs) would have a voice in how the new municipality operates. As a rural component of Tantramar, these communities shouldn&#8217;t be overlooked or absorbed without proper representation. Residents of the LSDs choose rural living for its open spaces and the independence it offers, and those values deserve to be protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past three years, the amalgamation process has been a significant learning experience; even for me, having spent most of my working life with the municipality. The reform was implemented with very little planning, leaving council and staff to navigate major changes on their own. In some cases, decisions were made without local input, including the dismissal of the CAO and appointment of a replacement by the provincial government without council&#8217;s involvement. These experiences are exactly why I felt it was important to step forward to ensure rural voices are heard and that our community has strong, informed representation moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>What would you like to accomplish if you are reelected?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200aIf reelected, I will continue working to ensure that the administration of Tantramar represents all residents equally. Currently, residents in the local service district must contact the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) themselves to request services such as road grading, pothole repairs, bush cutting, bridge maintenance and signage. This places an unfair burden on LSD residents. All residents of Tantramar should be able to bring their concerns to town hall, where a municipal representative can advocate on their behalf with DTI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past three years, LSD taxes have increased by 15 cents, while tax rates in the former town of Sackville and former village of Dorchester have decreased by 3 cents. LSD residents are paying more without receiving additional services, and this imbalance must be addressed through stronger representation and fair service delivery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m also concerned that the municipality is contracting out projects that could be completed efficiently in-house. We need to ensure taxpayers&#8217; dollars are being used responsibly and effectively. Another priority is solving the ongoing issues within the fire department as quickly and transparently as possible. Public safety depends on a well-functioning and supported department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, many existing bylaws do not reflect the realities of rural living in LSD areas. What works in town does not always work in rural communities. We need a more flexible approach with meaningful input from LSD residents on any new or revised bylaws that affect them. If reelected, I will continue to be a strong, consistent voice for all residents of Tantramar, ensuring fairness, accountability, and better service for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u200aThank you so much for taking the time to sit down today, Barry.
