Hicks spoke about his background, why he decided to run, and what he would want to focus on if elected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><sub>Listen to the interview below.<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/MAY-6-2026-KENNETH-HICKS.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This interview has been edited for clarity<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure. So I&#8217;ve lived in Sackville basically my entire adult life, outside of leaving for post-secondary education and leaving for a couple of job opportunities, one in Fredericton, one in Dartmouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of my life has been in Sackville. I&#8217;m married with two boys. One of my boys is graduating this year. My second boy&#8217;s in Grade 9, looking to graduate as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m currently working for the Department of Public Works in Nova Scotia. I&#8217;m with Vehicle Transportation Inspection. I&#8217;m a carrier safety officer with that department. I&#8217;ve been with Government of Nova Scotia now with various roles, in total 26 years now. I served as a correctional officer in the province, deputy sheriff, and now my current role as a carrier safety officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I&#8217;m drawing a lot of that experience for the purposes of being a candidate in the municipal election and using that experience to my best ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What made you want to run in this year&#8217;s municipal election?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you probably already know, I&#8217;ve run before, and now this is my second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m running currently because I feel that, and from listening to others, that they feel that town hall doesn&#8217;t appear to be listening, that they want to ensure that their voices are heard, and mine as well as a resident, I want to ensure that my voice is heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also want to ensure that the Sackville Fire Department is being looked after properly. It seems that town hall has been dragging their feet on that, making reference to things are complicated, and that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s taking so long. It doesn&#8217;t need to be complicated. We can solve that by getting boots on the trucks where they belong while still allowing the investigation to go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s something that we should ensure is being looked after properly, and a decision on that should be expedited as quickly as possible. It&#8217;s a core service that the town relies on and it&#8217;s something we shouldn&#8217;t be dragging our feet on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the last thing really important is property tax for people. People are concerned with taxation and that&#8217;s something that I want to tackle. That&#8217;s something that you hear a lot about. Just about every house and every person I&#8217;ve talked to, it&#8217;s taxation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So one of those things that I&#8217;m talking about, one of the pillars to my campaign, has been about what I call a 2% challenge. And what that is, is challenging every department within the municipality to save 2% on their budgets. And it&#8217;s not 2% to be cut from core, but it&#8217;s 2% to be cost cut from general things that they can easily cut from, and then we&#8217;re going to return those tax savings to the taxpayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you are elected on May 11th, what is it you hope to accomplish?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, a few things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right off the top, it&#8217;s just like with the second question, solving the problem that we have within the Sackville Fire Department. That&#8217;s something that should&#8217;ve been solved a long time ago. But if I&#8217;m elected, I&#8217;m going to make sure that it&#8217;s solved and solved properly, and make sure that it&#8217;s solved so that we have boots back on the truck, and so that we have the proper protection to our town that we need through our fire service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also with the 2% challenge that I spoke about earlier, I think it&#8217;s something that&#8217;s very doable. In the world that we live in now, it seems far too easy that taxes are increased or user fees or something like that. It always seems it&#8217;s just too easy an answer. What we need to do is we need to start looking within and making savings instead of just asking for more money all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s plenty of money to go around. All we have to do is make sure that we&#8217;re maximizing the amount of money that we have coming in. I think at times Sackville perhaps, or Tantramar, has a spending problem. Let&#8217;s have a savings problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And one of the big things I hear too is the accessibility to town hall or the accessibility to councillors. People find it difficult to either speak to their councillors or find a method to reach them, whether it&#8217;s through email, and also at town hall. People shouldn&#8217;t have to wait to come into town hall and ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;d like to restore that question period that we once had (at council meetings). Call it restoring the 15-minute question period. Bring that back so that people feel that they&#8217;re always in communication with town hall. We want more interaction. We want more people to come to town hall. We want more people to know what we&#8217;re doing. One of the great ways to foster that is making sure that people can come and speak. I think that&#8217;s really important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then advocating for cost breakdown when it comes to our taxes being paid. People want to know, &#8220;X amount of dollars I&#8217;m paying in, where is my money going?&#8221; And I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s an unreasonable request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thank you so much for taking the time to come down to CHMA.
