Zone 2 has eight new cases, Zones 3 has seven new cases, Zone 4 has two new cases, and in Zone 5 there is one new case. Zones 6 and 7 continue to report zero active cases.

None of the 143 active cases are hospitalized, which Dr. Russell says is good news.

She says that dozens of healthcare workers are still off work due for COVID-19 related reasons, which puts strain on New Brunswick’s healthcare system.

Dr. Jennifer Russell continued to discourage travel between health zones except for essential reasons, such as medical appointments.

“It is very well established that the COVID-19 virus cannot get very far on its own… While the virus isn’t mobile, people are,” said Dr. Russell before announcing the new travel restrictions.

RULES CHANGED FOR INTERPROVINCIAL TRAVEL

Interprovincial travel regulations changed for the stricter, citing the new and more transmissible COVID-19 variant plus recent outbreaks.

Canadians who live out of province are not permitted to enter New Brunswick, even if they have family members or own property there.

Travel into the province is now only permitted for work, medical, child custody, or compassionate reasons.

As of midnight tonight, New Brunswick residents returning to the province after working outside of province are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

It is possible to have a shorter isolation period, as long as a COVID-19 test is completed on the seventh day of isolation and the test comes back negative.

Previously the province offered a test on the fifth day of isolation, but changed the rule “to ensure [Public Health is] not missing potential positive cases.”

An additional test must be done between days 10 and 12 of the isolation period, otherwise the person must self-isolate for the full 14 days.

Those entering the province to work must complete the much less restrictive work isolation period for 14 days. More details on self-isolation versus work isolation to follow.

New Brunswick residents returning from an out of province medical appointment, and their support person, may be released from work isolation provided they test negative for COVID-19 on day seven and undergo additional testing between days 10 and 12.

Students coming from outside of New Brunswick must self-isolate for 14 days and take a COVID-19 test on day 10 of that isolation period. The same requirement is applied to international travelers, workers, and students. Those who travel for unnecessary reasons are also required to do the same.

These isolation protocols are not, however, applied to truckers or daily commuters.

WORK ISOLATION VERSUS SELF-ISOLATION

Work isolation is not as strict as self-isolation, which requires a person to remain entirely separate from others and not leave their residence.

Instead, work isolation allows for some contact with others, but with extra rules in place to prevent an outbreak.

A worker entering New Brunswick from out-of-province must do the following for 14 days upon arrival.

Travel directly to and from destination without making any additional stops,
Wear a mask in indoor public spaces,
Wear a mask in outdoor public spaces, even if you are able to maintain physical distancing,
Limit contacts to a single- household bubble while at home, no visitors in their home,
Being vigilant in self-monitoring for symptoms and getting tested and self-isolating as soon as possible should symptoms develop;
Avoid visiting those most vulnerable to COVID-19, including those in nursing homes and other adult residential facilities;
Wash hands or use sanitizer frequently;
Maintain a two-meter distance from others;
Avoid gatherings and social events;
May travel to work and school and directly home.
