Police in New Brunswick have charged a 40-year-old man from Burton with accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P say its investigation began in December after material was found on a device seized in a separate operation launched in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mounties say they arrested the accused in April in relation to the alleged crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say they charged him yesterday in Fredericton provincial court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Records obtained by C-B-C News show harness racing officials in New Brunswick recognized a problem with a gate about an hour before it fatally struck a three-year-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police records show a senior race judge at the event noted the starting gate appeared to be too close to the grandstand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A sergeant with the Woodstock Police Force said in a report that the official would have made the note about an hour before the event started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Brunswick Public Prosecution Services ultimately decided not to pursue criminal charges in the death of the boy, who was struck by the starting gate on June 14th last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All 10 provinces in Canada now have some sort of job protection for people who need extended time off for serious illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Brunswick was the last province to increase job protection for workers and it made the changes this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The provincial government adopted a law allowing up to 27 weeks of unpaid leave for illness and injury recovery \u2014 up from five days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now people from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador can take up to 26 or 27 weeks of unpaid leave for illnesses such as cancer without fear of losing their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two minor hockey players in Nova Scotia will stand trial early next year for alleged sexual assaults that were reported after a hockey hazing ritual last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither of the accused appeared in provincial youth court in Truro when a judge confirmed yesterday the trial for both youths will start on February 22nd in the same courthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A pre-trial conference set for August 20th of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
None of the allegations has been tested in court, and the identities of the accused and the alleged victims are protected from publication under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Danger-Tree)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A monument honouring a dark day in Newfoundland and Labrador history will be unveiled today in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A replica of the danger tree is being permanently installed at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On July 1st, 1916, hundreds of soldiers with the Newfoundland Regiment were killed or wounded in the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, many at the foot of the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Historian Frank Gogos (GOH-gus) is in France for the installation, which he says is an important reminder of the futility of the loss that happened there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Fire-Evacuation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Newfoundland and Labrador government says about 120 people were evacuated from a cabin area outside Labrador City because of a wildfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands said on social media last night that water bombers made progress beating back the fire in the Walsh River area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province expected an incident management team to be on site today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government\u2019s wildfire dashboard this morning says there are 24 active wildfires in the province, the majority of which are in Labrador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
