Her fifth great-grandmother was Sarah Hunt Goodwin, and for years the family believed Sarah’s husband Daniel Goodwin had been on the Loyalist side of the conflict.

Then they found his name in historian Ernest Clarke’s book about the siege of Fort Cumberland. He was listed with the rebels.

“That was the big shocker, that the person we thought was a Loyalist wasn’t,” Osborn said.

The discovery came while Osborn and Kathryn Fawcett Lewis were researching Families of the Siege, a presentation held Saturday evening at St. Mark’s Hall in Mount Whatley as part of events marking 250 years since the 1776 Eddy Rebellion. Six women took part, representing families that lived through the fighting around Fort Cumberland.

For Osborn and Fawcett Lewis, the work also led back to their own families.

Fawcett Lewis had recently spent a year and a half researching the history of Upper Sackville. Along the way, she came across stories about families outside the area she was writing about and set them aside. When Osborn began talking about commemorating the Eddy Rebellion, Fawcett Lewis remembered them.

“I thought, ‘Well, I know those people, but they’re not from Upper Sackville,’ so I didn’t include them in the book,” she said. “But they were in my mind, and I knew where to find them.”

They already had the stories. The challenge was finding people connected to them today. So instead of starting with someone in the present and tracing a family tree backwards, Fawcett Lewis said they worked in the other direction.

“We didn’t look for the ancestors and trace the history,” she said. “We had the history and we traced the ancestors.”

“We had the stories but not the people, so we just sort of connected the people to the stories, not the other way around.”

They used histories of Sackville and the Chignecto region, Ernest Clarke’s work on the siege, published material, archives and online resources to make those connections. Genealogy was already familiar to the family. Fawcett Lewis said the interest went back to their grandmother and she now does much of the research while her mother does the writing.

A participant in Families of the Siege tells the story of a family connected to the 1776 Eddy Rebellion during Saturday’s presentation in Mount Whatley. | Photo: Theodore Ramharack/CHMA.

Some of the names were familiar. Fawcett Lewis recognized families belonging to people she had grown up with or gone to school with. She also discovered she was related to the Keeler family, something she hadn’t known before.

Fawcett Lewis had initially planned to represent Ann Fawcett of Upper Sackville but realized Fawcett hadn’t been close to the rebellion itself. Then she learned about Mary Thompson Keeler and discovered the family connection.

“She’s my ancestor,” Fawcett Lewis recalled. “I’m gonna pick her instead.”

She said she had only learned about that connection about a month before the event.

Fawcett Lewis said Mary and her husband Thomas Keeler came from Yorkshire in 1774, two years before the rebellion. They lived about a mile from Fort Cumberland and remained loyal to the Crown. She also pointed to another local connection: Keillor House in Dorchester was later the home of their son John.

Osborn had a different surprise waiting for her. She was preparing to portray Sarah Hunt Goodwin, her fifth great-grandmother, and the family had long believed Sarah’s husband Daniel was on the Loyalist side.

“I had the story all written. We knew it all,” Osborn said. “And then we got Ernest Clarke’s book, and our ancestor is listed with the rebels.”

Osborn said they contacted Clarke to check what they had found and confirmed that Daniel Goodwin had served under Jonathan Eddy. She said Goodwin and Eddy had known and worked with one another for years before the rebellion. Goodwin later reaffirmed his allegiance to the King and remained in the area.

The research also showed how complicated those divisions could become once the fighting was over. Osborn said rebels such as the Goodwins, who reaffirmed their allegiance to the Crown, were able to stay and rebuild their lives. Others remained committed to the rebel cause and were imprisoned in Halifax or left for Massachusetts or Maine. Some eventually came back.

The arguments between families carried on long after the fighting stopped.

“There was a lot of litigation between families because some people had burned other people out, and they knew it,” Osborn said. “They were sued for their damages and losses.”

She said court records show those hard feelings continued in the area for almost 30 years.

Where the families came from also stood out in their research. Osborn said that, with one or two exceptions, most of the rebels they looked at had some connection to New England. Her Goodwin family came from Massachusetts, and Daniel Goodwin had travelled between the colonies and Nova Scotia.

Many of the Yorkshire settlers, by comparison, had only recently arrived and did not have those same New England ties. Osborn said that difference helped explain why people living in the same area could see the rebellion very differently.

Those details helped Osborn get at the question she was most interested in: why people made the choices they did.

“So as a genealogist, it’s one thing just to have the name of an ancestor on a piece of paper with a date,” she said. “That’s one thing. But for me, it was always the why.”

Religion, politics and the circumstances people were living in would all have shaped those decisions, Osborn said.

Saturday was also different from the historical reenactments Osborn normally takes part in. With DeLancey’s Brigade, she said she usually represents an era rather than one particular person. This time, genealogy allowed her to portray someone from her own family.

“To be able to tie in family genealogy to an event like what we’re doing today, I’ve never done it before,” Osborn said. “I don’t think Steve’s ever done it before. So this is very unusual, exceptional, different.”

A participant in Families of the Siege tells the story of a family connected to the 1776 Eddy Rebellion during Saturday’s presentation in Mount Whatley. | Photo: Theodore Ramharack/CHMA.

Her family’s connection to the area isn’t limited to genealogy records. Osborn said houses connected to the family are still standing, and relatives still live in some of them. In 2018, she travelled with her parents to Yorkshire, England, to visit the area where the Fawcett family came from.

“The roots are deep, the land is deep, the Yorkshire ties are deep,” she said.

For Fawcett Lewis, finding out about Mary Keeler happened much more recently. She said that left her with a different kind of connection to the person she was portraying than she would have had with an ancestor whose story she had known for years.

“I’m sort of at two ends of the spectrum,” she said. “The story was good, but the connection wasn’t there.”

Their research could also be seen in what they wore Saturday. Osborn described an English gown worn over several separate layers, including a shift, stays and petticoat. Even her pocket was a separate piece tied around her waist.

Osborn said she made most of her clothing by hand, apart from shoes and stockings, using materials such as linen and cotton and patterns based on clothing from the period.

“There’s a lot of layers,” she said. Making the clothing is “a lot of work,” but also “a work of the heart.”

For Osborn, putting women at the centre of the presentation wasn’t just about showing what they would have worn. She wanted to know what happened to women and families while the military history unfolded around them.

“For me, it’s always like men are interested in war because of the battles and the guns and how many people they can kill and who can win,” Osborn said. “For me, it’s always been how do the women live through war? How do their families survive? How do they come out of the other end, safe, whole or compromised? It’s always been about the women for me.”

That gave Families of the Siege a different focus within the anniversary weekend: what happened to the people and families living here when the rebellion divided the area.

Osborn said she hoped people would leave interested not only in the families represented Saturday, but in their own histories as well.

“I want them to be entertained. I want them to hopefully learn something,” she said. “But most of all, when they walk away, no matter who they are, where they’re from, what their history is, who their people are, I want them to take pride in that, to own it.”

“Your history’s important.”

Theodore Ramharack holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Western University and a diploma in Broadcast Journalism.
