{"id":9280,"date":"2021-02-04T09:58:46","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T13:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=9280"},"modified":"2021-02-04T10:50:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T14:50:06","slug":"town-staff-recommend-community-grants-come-in-under-budget-for-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/town-staff-recommend-community-grants-come-in-under-budget-for-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Town staff recommend community grants go under budget for 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hear this story as reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/tantramar-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tantramar Report<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Comm-Grants-proposed-Feb-4-2021.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This coming Monday, February 8, Sackville town council will consider approving a slate of community development grants for Sackville organizations in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillors had their first peek at the proposed list in a report presented at this past week\u2019s special council meeting by recreation manager Matt Pryde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pryde said that he, along with senior manager Kieran Miller and business development manager Ron Kelly Spurles, reviewed the 34 applications using a scoring matrix. The team ended up recommending in favour of 31 different requests from 29 different organizations, for a combined total of $81,650 in grants ranging in size from $400 to $8000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.36-AM.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.36-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.36-AM.png 840w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.36-AM-300x243.png 300w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.36-AM-768x623.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Applications and recommendations for community grants in the operational funds category, as presented to Sackville town council, February 1, 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total requested funding was $131,500, which is down from previous years, Pryde told council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat&#8217;s the first time since we&#8217;ve implemented the new community development grants program that we&#8217;ve had a decrease in requests,\u201d said Pryde. \u201cA lot of that is probably due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $81,650 in recommended funding is less than what was budgeted for the year, by $6,350. That shortfall was intentional, explained Pryde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe felt, as staff, that in the interest of fiscal responsibility and the uncertainty around COVID, that we evaluated the applications based on the matrix and the score that they received, and we felt that the $81,000+ was enough money to be able to meet all the needs of the organizations,\u201d said Pryde. \u201cAnd we didn&#8217;t feel like it was necessary to spend the full $88,000 at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For full disclosure to our listeners: CHMA\u2019s Attic Broadcasting applied for $15,000 in operational funding under the grants program for the first time this year, and was not recommended for funding. Neither of CHMA\u2019s reporters were involved in the grant application process, and the result will not impact reporting decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.44-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.44-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.44-AM.png 848w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.44-AM-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.44-AM-768x322.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Applications and recommendations for community grants in the special events and projects category, as presented to Sackville town council, February 1, 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another new applicant for operational funding was the newly formed Intangible Culture and Heritage Council of New Brunswick, an organization founded by Levee on the Lake producers Shelley Chase and Stacey Read. The group asked for $10,000 in operational funding, but was not recommended. The group also applied for a special events grant, and did receive a recommendation for $4,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matt Pryde said that staff decided the Intangible Cultural Society belonged in the same category as other festivals in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStaff saw them as a similar program to Sappyfest and the Sackville Early Music Festival,\u201d said Pryde, \u201cwhere they do offer, or are looking to offer, smaller events and productions and concerts throughout the year, but the $4,000 is primarily for the larger event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">$4000 is the maximum amount available under the Special Events grants, explained Pryde, though there is no limit on operational funding requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sappyfest is also recommended for $4,000 in the Special Events category, and the Centre for Artistic Achievements, which presents the Sackville Early Music Festival, is recommended for $3800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest recommended grants are for operational funds. Sackville Minor Hockey is recommended for an $8,000 grant. Tantramar Heritage Trust is recommended for $7500, and the Sackville Skating Club for $6,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Live Bait Theatre and the Sackville Swim Club are each recommended for $5000 in operational funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new project recommended for funding this year is Ensemble Moncton\u2019s new harm reduction vending machine, to be installed soon at the Sackville United Church. Ensemble asked for $3900 in funding to install the machine, said Pryde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s renovations being done, or already done, to allow 24\/7 access to the machine,\u201d said Pryde. \u201cAnd the machine would include things like unused needles, sanitary products, condoms, education materials, and possibly even snacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.51-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"851\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.51-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.51-AM.png 851w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.51-AM-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-04-at-10.00.51-AM-768x264.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Applications and recommendations for community grants in the small capital category, as presented to Sackville town council, February 1, 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to a question from Councillor Allison Butcher, Pryde also noted that several grants approved in last year\u2019s budget did not get spent in 2020, which he says is a first since he\u2019s been involved in the grant program, and likely due to COVID-19.
