Both are owned by the province. Both have left Tantramar residents and councillors responding locally to provincial bridge decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Peck&#8217;s Cove, the question is emergency access. The Peck&#8217;s Cove bridge near Lower Rockport is under a 16-tonne weight restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The century-old Wheaton Covered Bridge in Sackville has been closed to traffic since July 2024. With the province locked in for a new modern bridge beside it, the conversation has shifted to heritage preservation, and cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><sub>Hear the story below:<\/sub><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AUG-28-2026.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Temporary Peck&#8217;s Cove bridge planned for this year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillor Barry Hicks asked Premier Susan Holt about the Peck&#8217;s Cove bridge during a meeting between the Premier and Tantramar council last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holt said she did not have a construction start date, but had been told the temporary modular bridge is about 80 per cent designed. She said the province still plans to install it by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The update follows DTI\u2019s decision to reduce the existing bridge\u2019s weight limit from 20 tonnes to 16 tonnes months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lower restriction prevents full-sized fire trucks and some other heavy vehicles from crossing into Lower Rockport, which has no alternate road access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tantramar has established an interim firefighting plan involving smaller vehicles and three water tanks containing a combined 3,000 litres. Residents have also raised concerns about access for septic trucks, road-maintenance equipment, fuel and hay deliveries, and emergency equipment such as the Jaws of Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the province announced the temporary crossing, Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton told CHMA News that Peck&#8217;s Cove and the Wheaton bridges are examples of neglected rural infrastructure affecting public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m thinking of the Wheaton Covered Bridge. I&#8217;m thinking of Peck&#8217;s Cove Bridge,\u201d Mitton said. \u201cI&#8217;m thinking of a lot of this infrastructure that directly impacts public safety that hasn&#8217;t been maintained, that has been underfunded for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email sent before DTI announced the temporary crossing, Mitton said the Peck&#8217;s Cove replacement had appeared in earlier provincial capital plans before being delayed. According to Mitton, the province\u2019s 2023 plan indicated work would be done during the 2025-26 fiscal year. The following year, it was moved to 2026-27. It was removed from the plan in 2025, before reappearing with a 2028-29 timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been asking DTI to act with urgency, and avoid this becoming an emergency situation, but I think it&#8217;s becoming one,\u201d Mitton wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DTI has said the 16-tonne restriction is necessary to keep the existing bridge operating safely until it can be replaced. The department says it does not currently plan to repair the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA News contacted DTI on August 17 seeking an interview about the temporary crossing, the permanent replacement, the latest weight restriction and contingency planning. The department acknowledged the request the next morning and said it forwarded the request to its communications staff, but CHMA did not receive an interview or a substantive response to its questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wheaton committee heads to September meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"727c88\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"621\" sizes=\"(max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-27-234119-1.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98742 has-transparency\" style=\"--dominant-color: #727c88; width:793px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-27-234119-1.avif 621w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-27-234119-1-600x600.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-27-234119-1-300x300.avif 300w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A 2021 Google maps image shows a view of the historical bridge before being barricaded to traffic in 2024 | Image: Google Maps<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wheaton Covered Bridge presents a different challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 165-foot covered bridge was built in 1916 and closed to traffic in the summer of 2024 due to concerns about its condition. DTI has previously told CHMA it has no plans to restore it. Instead, the province plans to build a two-lane modular traffic bridge beside it, with construction expected to begin in June 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That leaves Tantramar to decide whether the municipality and community can find a way to preserve the existing structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a June meeting, staff presented five possible futures for the bridge: restoring it in place for recreational use, relocating it, salvaging its timber, building a replica after demolition, or leaving it with DTI for removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff estimated that restoration in its current location could cost the municipality more than $1 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, council directed staff to investigate preservation and long-term protection of the bridge and establish a citizen committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nine residents answered the municipality\u2019s call for committee members. But at Monday\u2019s committee of the whole meeting, councillors debated whether the proposed committee was too large and whether its mandate was too focused on saving the physical structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillor Alyssa Greene said council needed more information about the proposed members and clearer direction about what the committee would be asked to accomplish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn three years, if we were waiting that long, there won&#8217;t be a bridge.\u201d Greene said while questioning the committee\u2019s proposed three-year term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillor Tori Weldon said the committee should consider what should happen if saving the bridge proves impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hicks also said he wanted the committee to examine alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d like to have more options than just saving the bridge or maybe a way that we make a replica or whatever,\u201d Hicks said, \u201cI&#8217;d like to see the options before I vote for this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillor Allison Butcher argued further delays could threaten whatever chance remains to preserve the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur bridge is falling apart. It has been for a long time,\u201d Butcher said. \u201cWe can&#8217;t take two, three months just to figure out who&#8217;s on our committee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council voted 5-3 to send the proposed committee membership and terms of reference to its September 8 consent agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Peck&#8217;s Cove Bridge and Wheaton Covered Bridge are not the same kind of problem.
