DNR reports nearly double the number of fires across province compared to last year
A forest fire in the Brooklyn Road area of Tantramar has been extinguished after a multi-agency response Tuesday afternoon (April 28).
According to the municipality, fire services were dispatched at approximately 1:33 pm to the Midgic-area scene. The fire was brought under control within a few hours and later confirmed fully extinguished.
Officials say no structures were lost, and credited a coordinated response involving firefighters from Sackville, Dorchester and Point de Bute, along with Strait Shores Fire, RCMP, and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources.
Wildfire activity higher than last year
Provincial data from the Department of Natural Resources shows a significant increase in wildfire activity compared to last year.
As of this date in 2025, 68 forest fires had been reported across New Brunswick according to public data with the Department of Natural Resources. This year, that number has risen to 139 fires, representing roughly a 100 per cent increase.
The spike highlights the risks associated with early spring conditions, when dry grass and brush can allow fires to spread quickly despite cooler temperatures.
Officials continue to remind residents to follow provincial guidelines when burning outdoors, particularly as wildfire risk can change quickly during the spring season.
