CHMA is excited to be offering a position for a Changing Narratives Fund local journalist. This paid, full-time position is made possible through funding provided by the Community Radio Fund of Canada and the Government of Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative.
The Changing Narratives Fund (CNF) is a new initiative that will support Indigenous Peoples, Black, racialized, ethno-religious minorities, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQIA+ community members to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives, allowing their voices to be accurately and authentically represented in the media and culture sectors in Canada.
The objective of the CNF is to implement incentives and initiatives that encourage greater participation by members of these communities and organizations in the culture and media sectors. To achieve this objective, the CNF will provide support for mentorship, training and professional development opportunities for and by members of these communities at all career stages to allow an increase in involvement in various industries.
CHMA is a non-profit campus radio station based at Mount Allison University, serving listeners throughout the Greater Tantramar Region. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and underrepresented voices. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 100 volunteers, a volunteer board of directors, and a small but dedicated staff of community members and students.
The applicant will work to generate daily news stories on issues and activities that arise from local institutions and governments within the North Cumberland and Westmorland counties, including issues relating to local governments and institutions, Indigenous groups, climate change, poverty and economic development as well as cultural activities such as art galleries, theatre groups, music festivals and other special interests groups.
This position will work with our other LJI journalist and Radiometres funded part-time journalists and Community Mentor/Editor to fill out our weekly news broadcasts on 106.9 FM as well as post to our website and email newsletter on chmafm.com. The CNF-LJI articles will also be submitted to www.frequencynews.ca.
CNF-LJI funding is specifically to hire a journalist who will take part in professional development activities to foster career growth and advancement opportunities while producing civic journalism for underserved communities. The journalist must self-identify as belonging to one or more CNF Priority Communities (Indigenous, Black, Racialized, Ethno-religious minority, Persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+). The ideal candidate will be motivated, creative and organized — an enterprising journalist who needs little direction in researching, writing, editing and presenting local news stories.
Qualifications
- Hold a university degree or college or technical diploma in Arts, Journalism, Communications, or Broadcasting (Radio or Television Arts) from an accredited educational institution, or an experience and work history equivalent;
- Have experience in broadcast and/or print journalism;
- Have a passion for journalism, research, storytelling, language and accurate reporting;
- Demonstrate expertise in original news-gathering, writing, editing for short-form and long-form reports;
- Possess strong interviewing skills;
- Have a distinct clear voice;
- Possess a broad knowledge of local and regional issues;
- Demonstrate solid audio production skills (hardware and software).

The salary is $55,000 for a 40-hour work week. Renewal is subject to funding. We’re open to remote/work from home accommodations with interactions and engagement through our Slack group.
