Port Elgin Farmer’s Market has re-opened for their season on Saturday, May 3rd. This year, the market is located at 15 East Main Street in Port Elgin. The building is owned by Randy Geddes, who is also one of the vendors.
Randy and the other vendors were encouraged by how the opening day went.
“Well, it, it was really encouraging. We’re happy with the, with the traffic flow today, and, and I hope that, you know, next week we can have maybe another vendor or two and, and, you know, build it up to, to have more commodities, more things that people might need if they’re here vacationing or, or locals as well. We hope to try to offer a little bit of everything.”
The market boasts baker’s; crafters; homemade dog treats; artwork; antiques; and lovely jams and jellies from the students at Port Elgin Regional School, as well as fresh greens from their greenhouse.
Saturday is a popular market day in the wider area, with the Sackville Farmers’ Market and an intended market down the road at Tidnish Bridge to start up later in the season.
Randy says he knows that there are other markets in the community, and that their objectives are not directed at competing. What the Port Elgin Market wants to do is offer an opportunity for people that might like to try selling at markets. The market looks forward to growing the number of vendors and encourages folks that are crafters or have hobby firms or have other products for sale to try out the market experience in Port Elgin.
The market is open from 9:00am to 1:00pm every Saturday. Vendor tables or $15 with a portion of each week’s table fee going toward a charity in the community.
