Part-time Journalist/Community News Contributor (Open)

We are currently accepting applications for 2 part-time journalists (10-12 hours per week, $24/hour) to work with our local news team to continue our commitment to hyper-local reporting in the Tantramar region. Experience is not necessary, but we expect you to have a deep commitment to community broadcasting and the professionalism to work with a team, and to develop and deliver your work in a timely manner.

These positions are open to Mount Allison students as well as community members. You will be expected to attend weekly meetings with the Mentor/Editor and other journalists and to work independently to complete the weekly stories. Audio experience is also not necessary, but familiarity with technology and digital media management would be considered a valuable asset.

As a journalist for CHMA, you will work to generate news stories on issues and activities that arise from local institutions and governments within the North Cumberland and Westmorland counties, including issues relating to local governments and institutions, Indigenous groups, climate change, poverty and economic development as well as cultural activities such as art galleries, theatre groups, music festivals and other special interests groups. We’re open to remote/work from home accommodations with interactions and engagement through our Slack group.

• Create original civic journalism and news that meets the diverse needs of the
  underserved communities of Westmoreland and Cumberland counties, NB & NS.
• Produce local content/original news articles/programs/interviews each week and
  compiling/writing news for reading on-air and contribute to CHMA’s Community News
  Program. Produced content to be promoted on social media and submitted to the chmafm.com in a timely manner.
• Work closely with our other reporters to provide continuity of content.
• Attend weekly editoral meetings with the Community Mentor/Editor and report on progress.

Part-Time Journalist // CHMA Radiometres (2 positions)

CHMA is very excited to announce that we were successful in securing a major grant to further support our local reporting. We have received a $35,000 grant from the Community Radio Fund of Canada for our News Department to retain a Community Mentor/Editor and 2 part-time radio journalists.

Part-time Journalist, Local Journalism Initiative

CHMA is very excited to again offer a second journalism position with funding from the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative Program. As a journalist for CHMA, you will work to generate news stories on issues and activities that arise from local institutions and governments within the North Cumberland and Westmorland counties, including issues relating to local governments and institutions, Indigenous groups, climate change, poverty and economic development as well as cultural activities such as art galleries, theatre groups, music festivals and other special interests groups. We’re open to remote/work from home accommodations with interactions and engagement through our Slack group.

This is a part-time position at $24/hr for a 10-15 hour work week. Availability on some evenings/weekends/holidays in coordination with the 2nd journalist is important.

Qualifications

~ Have experience in broadcast and/or print journalism;
~ Have a passion for journalism, research, storytelling, language and accurate reporting;
~ Demonstrate expertise in original news-gathering, writing, editing for short-form and long-form reports;
~ Possess strong interviewing skills;
~ Have a distinct clear voice;
~ Possess a broad knowledge of local and regional issues;
~ Demonstrate solid audio production skills (hardware and software).

Community Media Internship (International)

**Important**
This position is only available to Mount Allison Student in the Future NB – International internship program and that have completed the appropriate training sessions.

CHMA, in partnership with Mount Allison University, is very excited to  offer a paid internship to an International Student attending Mount Allison University. CHMA plays an essential role in local news and independent culture at Mount Allison University and in the Sackville Area. We are offering this internship to help gain exciting, hands-on, real-world experience working in broadcast media, audio production, research, content creation, and the operations of a non-profit arts organization. 

Community Media is constantly changing and we strive to maintain a connection with our community. Radio is our primary medium, but many of our projects include social media, video, podcasting, live stream, digital publishing and audio production. We’re interested in engaging with you to develop your skills whether it’s digital literacy, public presentation, research, or production and in return we ask that you contribute to our broadcast and day-to-day activities. Our interns are offered to host day time programming, assist in day-to-day activities such as local spot production, community calendar updates, social media and event coordination.

~You will play an integral role in the day-to-day functions of CHMA in our collaborative work environment.

~You are invited to contribute to programming, audio production, broadcasting, and journalism through both our on-air broadcasting and online platforms. 

~You agree to produce content each week that contributes to our on-air broadcast and/or online distribution platforms.

~You will be expected to attend our weekly staff meetings and our monthly board meetings.

~As a Intern, you will work with our staff and volunteers to further our mandate of informing and entertaining our community to meet the diverse needs of the communities of Westmoreland and Cumberland counties, NB & NS.

~ This position is available to current, full-time, returning international students of Mount Allison University. It is a paid position of $17.30/hr with an expected work week of 10 hours per week for 12 weeks.

No experience is expected but the ideal candidate will have an interest in community building through media, a creative mindset, the ability to multitask, and to work independently as well as collaboratively. Past volunteer experience and community involvement is valued.
