On today’s show, we talk with some of the people behind a new affordable housing development springing up in Amherst. The Groves at Hillsdale will be operated by United Way Maritimes, and will eventually feature 47 residential units, including 19 affordable rentals and 28 homes for ownership.
Amherst CAO Jason MacDonald says the town contributed to the project through building $640,000 in sewer, water and street infrastructure because staff and council felt it was “the proper thing to do,” and the municipal commitment helped make the project happen.
Sarah Flemming of United Way Maritimes says the new modified shared equity home ownership model used at The Groves “could disrupt the housing market as it currently exists,” and even “change the future, for generations.”
