Tantramar has adopted a new Fire Prevention Bylaw that introduces stricter rules around outdoor burning and fire safety across the municipality.
Under the new bylaw, most outdoor fires now require a permit, with only limited exceptions such as small recreational fires, cooking fires, and approved ceremonial or agricultural burns.
In residential areas like Sackville and Dorchester, fires must be contained in approved devices, kept at least three metres away from buildings and property lines, and constantly supervised while in use.
The bylaw also gives fire officials expanded authority to extinguish any fire they believe poses a risk, even if it was initially permitted.
Larger burns now require detailed applications, including site plans, safety equipment, and in some cases two million dollars in liability insurance.
Officials say the changes are designed to improve safety as the region enters wildfire season, when dry spring conditions can increase fire risk.
