Urban/Rural Rides reflects on volunteering and transportation needs in its rural communities
Urban/Rural Rides is a volunteer-based transportation service that helps connect residents with medical appointments, grocery stores, food banks, and other essential destinations in Tantramar and around New Brunswick. They are encouraging more people to consider volunteering, as the organization reflects on the changing role of volunteers in rural communities.
In a recent public message titled ‘Each Generation Adds Its Piece’, the organization says longtime volunteers are stepping back after years of service, while fewer new volunteers are stepping forward to replace them.
The organization says some longtime volunteers have recently stepped away following personal loss and life changes, highlighting how much community transportation programs rely on volunteers.
In its public message, Urban/Rural Rides says many riders never see the “small acts of kindness behind the wheel,” but that those moments help reduce isolation and keep communities connected.
The organization is currently seeking additional volunteer drivers.
According to the organization’s website, volunteer drivers use their own vehicles, receive mileage reimbursement, and can choose their own schedules and service areas. Drivers must also complete background checks and meet safety requirements before joining the program.
