Mount Allison Students’ Union is preparing a week of activities and events to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Set to be held next week, Pride Week activities at Mount Allison will bring students and the Tantramar community together to celebrate and learn.
“Pride Week is tradition at Mount Allison and an opportunity each year to come together in celebration and recognition of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” says university president Ian Sutherland. “It is a chance to celebrate with our campus and wider Tantramar community, strengthen our connections with one another, and reflect on the importance of continuing to build a community where everyone is welcome and belongs.”
Will Stott, MASU vice-president of external affairs, said it’s important to celebrate Pride Week in September because it helps foster a welcoming and inclusive environment at the beginning of the school year when the new students are arriving back on campus.
“These events help set the tone for the year to come,” said Stott. “The events throughout the week are meant to be inclusive for all and to exist without barriers to participation for our students.”
The events will kick off with a flag raising on Monday, Sept. 21 at 4:30 pm at the university flagpoles beside the Owens Art Gallery. Following this, the Pride Parade will proceed along York Street and Main Street to the Tantramar municipal office, where the community’s flag will be raised.
Other events throughout the week include: a queer academic panel, Pride trivia and rainbow cookie decorating, a clothes swap, movie in the park, and Pride night at Ducky’s Pub.
