Things to do around Tantramar this coming week

We keep our ear to the Tantramar street around CHMA, and here’s a handy roundup of local events worthy of your calendar. From climate conversations and creative workshops to trivia, film screenings, and live music, there’s plenty happening in Sackville and the area.

  • Indigenous Speaker Series: History of Mi’kmaq Quill Work – Wednesday, January 28
    Mount Allison’s Indigenous Speaker Series welcomes award-winning Mi’kmaq quill artist Melissa Peter Paul for a talk on the history of Mi’kmaq quill work on Wednesday, January 28, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Crabtree M14 at Mount Allison University.
  • Bagtown’s Winter Trivia Night – Wednesday, January 28
    Bagtown kicks off its winter trivia series on Wednesday, January 28, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., with Marcie and Jenna hosting and a themed round on “2025”. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., and the door cover is a minimum donation of $2.50, which includes one drink ticket. Alcoholic options are $7.50, and non-alcoholic options are $5. Throughout the winter, teams will play for Bagtown pints, and there will be an attendance draw at the end of the series.
  • Ducky’s Trivia – Thursday, January 29
    Ducky’s is once again launching its every other Thursday Trivia Night on Thursday, January 29, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Trivia is taking over Ducky’s, with a special prize for both the top-scoring team and the group with the best team name, so creativity really counts. The evening is hosted by Luc Poirier, one of the owners and your host for the night, and everyone is encouraged to come early, bring their smartest and funniest friends, and be part of a lively night at Ducky’s.
  • Sackville Film Society – Bad Shabbos – Thursday, January 29
    The Sackville Film Society screens Bad Shabbos at the Amherst Theatre on Thursday, January 29, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Directed by Daniel Robbins, the film follows an interfaith engaged couple as they plan a Shabbat dinner for the first meeting of their parents, only to have an unexpected death interrupt their carefully laid plans. Tickets are available at the box office, with six pack punch cards for $66 and single admissions for $12.
  • Ducky’s Open Mic Night – Saturday, January 31
    Ducky’s Open Mic Night runs every other Saturday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., turning Saturday afternoons into stage time for local performers. Starting January 17, the pub opens its stage to acoustic musicians, poets, comedians, and anyone with something creative to share. Audience members can come to perform, cheer on friends, or simply relax with a pint of craft beer while Ducky’s celebrates local talent and good energy. Acoustic acts only, and performers are invited to bring their best tunes, words, and laughs while Ducky’s provides the mic.
  • Rueda de Casino – Monday, February 2
    Rueda de Casino is a fun social Cuban circle dance with upbeat music and lots of laughter, running Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Sackville Curling Club. A new session has started, and the group restarts from the beginning when new dancers join, making this a great time to try it out. No partner or previous experience is needed, and the group aims for a friendly, energetic vibe with no pressure to be good at dancing, with a mix of skill levels helping newcomers learn the steps quickly. The cost usually runs about $5-$6 per night, based on attendance, and is paid in blocks to cover rental costs.
  • Nocturnal Variations: A Puppet Cabaret – Wednesday, February 4 to Saturday, February 7
    Nocturnal Variations: A Puppet Cabaret, by Ian McFarlane and student creators, invites audiences into an endless night of sleepless dreams where the performers are more than human and the cabaret feels surreal. Featuring original puppet acts, this design-focused devised theatre project explores the precarity of the current moment with humour, grace, and a touch of absurdity, and is recommended for audiences aged fourteen and up. Nocturnal Variations runs from Wednesday, February 4 to Saturday, February 7, starting at 7:30 p.m. each night in Motyer Fancy Theatre at Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, with tickets priced at $5.
  • Winter Ultimate Frisbee – Tuesday, February 3
    Winter Ultimate Frisbee returns to the Church by the Lake on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., starting Tuesday, February 3. Players are invited to stay active through the winter with indoor ultimate in a relaxed, welcoming setting, with a registration fee of twenty five dollars that goes toward gym rental. Spots fill quickly, and registration is available at www.tantramarnb.com/active-living-culture.
  • Dorchester NB Poets Circle – Tuesday, February 3
    Louise Paul Tattoos is hosting a Poets Circle on Tuesday, February 3 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Greater Dorchester Moving Forward Co-op. Participants are welcome to bring their own poems, share poems they love, or simply listen and take part in the discussion while enjoying tea and comfy seating. The event is free and open to all, with donations for the community fridge accepted.
