Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton is calling on the Liberal government to live up to its commitment to be “the most transparent government New Brunswick has ever seen,” and tell residents how many AI data centres are being proposed in the province.
She also said the government must say which communities may be affected by the projects.
Mitton issued a statement on Tuesday after it was revealed a second data centre was proposed for Saint John, in addition to the 390-megawatt centre in Lorneville currently under regulatory review.
“The Holt government’s proposed AI data centre framework is so weak. It’s clear that it won’t protect New Brunswickers from the harms caused by rapid hyperscale AI data centre development,” said Mitton in the statement.
“They need to hit the brakes and put a moratorium in place. We need legally enforceable legislation to protect New Brunswickers from the adverse health impacts and many other negative consequences of data centres before it’s too late.”
Mitton’s statement comes three weeks after Conservative MP for New Brunswick Southwest John Williamson called on the New Brunswick government to reject the Lorneville project, as it would increase electricity rates for residents.
