A team of Mount Allison University students is being recognized after a strong showing in a regional business competition, highlighting the school’s role in developing finance and business talent.

Five students – Andrew Leslie, Evan Wood, Spencer Desveaux, Tom Dessureault, and Hinke Younger – earned second place at the Atlantic Regional CFA Institute Research Challenge, finishing just 0.25 points behind first place.

The competition brought together teams from six universities across Atlantic Canada, tasking students with conducting an in-depth analysis of a real-world company. Mount Allison’s team focused on Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Tim Hortons and Burger King.

The process required months of preparation, including building financial models, writing detailed reports, and presenting their findings to panels of industry judges.

Students say the experience pushed them beyond traditional classroom learning, requiring them to apply analytical, research, and presentation skills in a real-world context.

The result also reflects Mount Allison’s broader approach to education, where smaller class sizes and cross-disciplinary collaboration allow students to gain hands-on experience and compete with larger programs in the region.

Beyond the competition itself, initiatives like the Investment Club and outreach opportunities help connect students with industry-level work, contributing to the region’s talent pipeline and economic development.

The team’s second-place finish signals that Mount Allison students are continuing to make an impact both inside and outside the classroom.
