A new cafe has sprung to life on York Street in Sackville, just as the street has lost three historic buildings to demolition this week.
CHMA stopped in at The Roost, in the former location of the Cackling Goose, to met Tantramar’s newest entrepreneurs, Ben Sears and Leo Kalverda.
The Roost opened last Friday, and co-owner Leo Kalverda says the cafe was busy right away, even with just a social media post and a sidewalk sign. “I guess word goes around pretty quickly,” Kalverda says with a smile. “We were really surprised with how busy we’ve been, and yeah, we’re just really grateful for it.”
“We’re mainly doing soup, sandwiches, coffee, espresso,” says Kalverda. With beans sourced from a Moncton roaster and bread from Sackville Farmers Market regulars Esser’s European Style Bakery, Kalverda says the duo are “trying to keep a lot of stuff kind of local… We’re just really excited to open and contribute to our Sackville community.”
