A 72-year-old New Brunswick man has been sentenced to two years of house arrest for purposely using his vehicle to hit an 18-year-old youth.

Court heard that Howard Cunningham of Chatham, New Brunswick, got in his vehicle in March 2023 after he became annoyed with neighbourhood boys who were playing a game of “Nicky Nicky Nine Door.”

Court of King’s Bench Justice Stephen J. Doucet said Cunningham had been provoked, but the judge said the accused  knew his “brutal, senseless and violent act” was likely to cause serious injuries, though there was no planning or deliberation.

Cunningham had earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and failing to stop an the accident scene, where the victim suffered a broken ankle, a cracked pelvis, a split lip and cracked teeth.

Police charged three men in connection with his death last year.

Nova Scotia Power’s C-E-O says up to 140-thousand social insurance numbers could have been stolen by cyber-thieves who recently hacked into the utility’s customer records.

Peter Gregg says the utility collected the numbers from customers to authenticate their identities.

He says social insurance numbers were in about half of the 280-thousand customer records breached by cyber-criminals and released onto the dark web.

The breach was first reported in late April.

The Nova Scotia government is refusing to release the recommendations of a panel tasked with examining environmental racism in the province and the minister responsible isn’t saying why.

Becky Druhan, who is responsible for the Office of Equity and Anti-Racism, repeatedly avoided giving a reason under repeated questioning by reporters yesterday, following a cabinet meeting.

The panel was appointed in June 2023 to look at how racism affects a community’s natural environment and it was to submit recommendations by the end of that year.

N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender calls it “disheartening” the government sat on the findings for more than a year, while Interim Liberal leader Derek Mombourquette says it’s sending a “disgraceful” message in not releasing the recommendations.

Prince Edward Island’s interim premier now says he’s not ruling out running to become leader of the Progressive Conservative party.

Lantz had previously indicated he wasn’t interested in holding on the top political job beyond the interim gig.

He replaced Dennis King as interim premier on February 21st.

He now says many Islanders have approached him about reconsidering his earlier decision not to run for the party’s leadership, and he released a statement saying — quote — “I owe it to those who have been encouraging me to have a conversation with them and hear what they have to say — and that’s what I am doing right now.”
