A national conservation group says the spring migratory season got off to an encouraging start for one threatened bird species.

Birds Canada says it logged more than two-thousand-400 chimney swifts at a single address in downtown Fredericton.

The scimitar-shaped chimney swifts are classified as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, and are also protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act.

Scientists say the birds are now threatened due to climate change, habitat loss and pesticide use, which depletes the supply of flying insects they rely on for food. (The Canadian Press)

Two leading environmental groups are saying yes to Nova Scotia’s ambitious plan to expand its fledgling offshore wind energy industry — but with caveats.

Sierra Club Canada executive director Gretchen Fitzgerald says the premier’s plan — which includes building transmission lines across the country — represents an exciting opportunity for the province.

Ecology Action Centre senior energy coordinator Thomas Aranson McNeil, called on the province to build public trust — especially with coastal communities.

Premier Tim Houston has said the province’s plan to license enough offshore wind farms to produce five megawatts of electricity would be increased eightfold to 40 gigawatts and that he’s called on Ottawa to help cover the costs of his new Wind West project. (The Canadian Press)

(NL-Patchy-Frost)

Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for parts of western, central, and northern Newfoundland.

It says temperatures are forecast to dip to zero early this morning.

It says clear skies and light winds with cool temperatures could bring about patchy frost, especially in low lying areas.

The weather agency is asking people to cover up plants, especially in frost-prone areas. (The Canadian Press)

(NL-Vehicle-Fatality)

R-C-M-P in Newfoundland and Labrador say they are investigating a collision that left a 34-year-old man dead.

Police say they were called to the site of a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway in the early hours of Friday morning.

They say a car going west on the Trans-Canada Highway hit an eastbound tractor trailer.

Police say the 34-year-old man — who was the lone occupant of the car — was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, while the tractor trailer driver sustained minor injuries. (The Canadian Press)
