(NB-Old-Puffin)
A University of New Brunswick researcher says an island at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy has been home to what researchers are calling a very old puffin.
U-N-B graduate student Daniel Oliker says one of the tuxedo birds he found on Machias (muh-CHY’-ihs) Seal Island is about 33 years old.
Oliker says the birds give birth starting around four or five, so this bird has probably had more than 25 chicks in its lifetime — even if not all survived.
He says puffins in the wild usually live to their mid-20s.

A restored replica of the square-rigged sailing ship that sparked a wave of Scottish immigration to Nova Scotia 250 years ago has been relaunched.
The rebuilt hull of the Hector slid back into the harbour in Pictou (PIHK’-toh) with a big splash during a colourful ceremony Saturday as a large crowd lined the shore.Â
During the traditional launch, the vessel was guided down seven ramps — known as launchways — after supporting wedges were removed.
As more funding becomes available, the next phase of the project will begin – installing electric motors along with masts and sails.
