Residents in New Brunswick have found comfort in the province’s new wildfire alert system that was deployed by municipalities to combat misinformation.
The summer saw 380 fires in just over 26-hundred-hectares, up from the province’s 10-year average of 408 hectares a year.
The Voyent Alert! notification system was rolled out and allowed municipalities to reach subscribed residents through an app, text, email or a text-to-speech phone call.
In August, 25 communities in the province used the system, with 50-thousand residents signed up. (CBC)

(NB-Cellular-Improvements)
The New Brunswick government is partnering with Bell Canada to improve cellular coverage in rural areas of the province.
Existing government communications towers will be used to expedite the deployment of equipment from the service provider.
Bell Canada says the work on the first 10 sites will start in 2026 and be complete by mid-2027.
The initiative is made possible through a collaboration involving the Department of Finance and Treasury Board, which is responsible for the government’s telecommunications strategy. (The Canadian Press)

The federal government says it will begin a buyback of assault-style firearms from individual owners with a pilot project in Nova Scotia.
The pilot will be open to eligible firearm owners in select areas of Cape Breton to ensure it runs smoothly before it’s launched across the country.
Eligible firearms owners can file a declaration of interest through a web portal starting October 1st.
Ottawa has outlawed approximately two-thousand-500 types of guns, saying they belong on the battlefield and not in the hands of hunters or sport shooters.

Nominations have closed for candidates contesting the provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador on October 14th.
The province’s chief electoral officer confirmed yesterday that 129 candidates will be on the ballots that day.
The three main parties — Liberal, Progressive Conservative and the New Democratic Party — each has a full slate of 40 candidates.
There are also nine are non-affiliated candidates.

(NL-Rocket-Launch) *Watch for dating*
A company hoping to launch a rocket into space from southern Newfoundland says it will try again this morning.
NordSpace was preparing to launch its Taiga rocket from its spaceport near St. Lawrence yesterday when fire and black smoke appeared suddenly on the livestreamed footage of the takeoff.
The company later said it had a problem with its launch pad.
NordSpace says if this morning’s launch is successful, it will be the first fully commercial space launch in Canadian history.

The P-E-I government is reminding residents that hurricane season is not over yet.
The province is asking people to check on their emergency kits, and keep them handy.
Residents should have extra food, water and fuel for generators and vehicles, as well as propane for outdoor cooking devices such as barbeques. (The Canadian Press)
