A New Brunswick man has won a one-million-dollar lottery prize.
Atlantic Lottery says Pierre Landry from Cormier Village won the Lotto Max draw on December 30th, but he didn’t check his ticked until New Year’s Eve.
Landry, who works in a fish smokehouse, says he sat in his chair for five minutes before he decided it was time to wake up his wife and give her the good news.
He says the couple plans to buy a motorhome and drive across Canada.

(NB-Preventable-Deaths)
The independent New Brunswick Health Council has released new data showing the leading causes of potentially preventable deaths across the province.
Between 2018 and 2022, the leading causes were lung cancer, heart diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A preventable death is recorded when someone dies before the age of 75 but they could have lived longer with prevention and care options, such as a healthier lifestyle, early disease detection or effective treatment.
In New Brunswick, a person born today can expect to live about 80 years and four months. Across Canada, the average life expectancy is slightly higher at 81 years and six months.

(NS-RCMP-Firearm-Fatal)
Nova Scotia’s police oversight agency is investigating after R-C-M-P shot at and killed a man near Sipekne’katik First Nation Tuesday morning.
Yesterday, R-C-M-P issued an alert for residents of Hants and Colchester counties warning of a man with a firearm driving in the area.
R-C-M-P say they worked to stop the vehicle and then fired multiple shots.
The police watchdog says the man was pronounced dead at the scene and they are now investigating.

(NL-MUN-Cuts)
Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador is axing several executive roles as it scrambles to cut spending by more than 20-million dollars.
The school says it is reducing the number of its vice presidents from seven to three.
A spokesperson says this resulted in one employee losing their job, while other vice-president roles have been combined and downgraded in salary scales.
The school is struggling with budget shortfalls, driven in part by a drop in enrollment.

(NS-Alcohol-Thefts)
R-C-M-P say they’ve charged a youth with a series of big-money alcohol thefts in the city.
Police say there were called to multiple thefts at liquor stores both in and around the city, and determined the same suspect was behind them all.
A Dartmouth youth has been charged with ten courts of theft over five-thousand dollars along with other charges.
He has appeared in Halifax Provincial Court and remanded pending a future court appearance.

(NL-False-Info-Arrest)
A man in Newfoundland tried to evade arrest by giving R-C-M-P a false name and identifying information.
On Friday, Port Saunders R-C-M-P pulled over a driver going the wrong way down a one-way street.
After pulling the driver over, the man told R-C-M-P he was not from the area, and provided them with a false name, date of birth, and residence.
Police say they conducted an investigation and learned the man lived nearby and was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant.
