Health officials in New Brunswick say there are three confirmed and five probable cases of measles in the province’s south-central region.

Dr. Kimberley Barker, regional medical officer of health for Sussex,  says the situation is evolving and she did not give the ages of those infected with measles, citing privacy.

Barker says there could be more cases, including people with symptoms who are staying home and not seeking medical care.

The province recently confirmed that measles vaccination rates among children were not at 95 per cent – the minimal threshold scientists say stops the disease from spreading.

Canadian border officials say they recently seized the largest shipment of suspected cannabis in the country since 2015 at the port in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Border officers discovered six-thousand 700 kilograms of the drug on May 21.

Officials say the suspected cannabis was concealed inside 400 boxes in a marine container that was destined for export to Scotland.

The agency says the quantity seized is three times more than the total amount of cannabis border agents seized across Canada in 2024.

A wildfire on Newfoundland’s Bonavista Peninsula has destroyed an unknown number of cabins in the area.

Provincial fire duty officer Mark Lawlor says the fire began Monday in a wooded area near Jamestown.

While the fire remained out of control yesterday, Lawlor says high humidity levels are slowing its growth.

He says firefighters have been attacking the blaze with the assistance of helicopters and an air tanker dumping water.

The C-E-O of Via Rail says the passenger rail service wants to use refurbished rail cars to improve its route between Halifax and Montreal.

Mario Péloquin made the comments after a ceremony marking the completion of renovations to Via’s Halifax station yesterday.

Péloquin says Ottawa has committed to renewing the corporation’s entire Canadian fleet within ten years.

But he says he doesn’t know yet whether the refurbished cars will be enough to restore daily service to the Halifax-Montreal line, which currently runs three times a week.
