As Tantramar gets ready to welcome 2025, thoughts will soon turn to a change in local governance for the municipality.
Municipal elections are set for May 11, 2026 and voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for a new mayor and council in the municipality of Tantramar.
The municipality, which was divided into five electoral wards in the 2022 election, will once again elect one mayor and a total of eight councillors. Residents of each ward will vote for their own councillors, while everyone can cast their ballot for a new mayor. One representative will be elected from Ward 1, one from Ward 2, four from Ward 3, 1 from Ward 4, and 1 from Ward 5.

Nominations for candidates open on March 23 and close April 10. Advance polls will take place May 2 and May 4.

EOS Eco-Energy will be hosting discussions in the new year to help gain feedback for the municipality of Tantramar’s Climate Change Adaptation Plan.
The first will be held in January in Dorchester, where residents will join EOS representatives for a discussion and community risk mapping activity around extreme weather events and to provide their insight into how the changing climate is impacting them.
The event, set for 5 to 7:30 pm on Friday, January 16 at the Dorchester Veterans Community Hall, will feature refreshments and door prizes. RSVP by emailing climatechange@eosecoenergy.com

Renowned Amherst artist and studio owner Deanne Fitzpatrick received national honours last week as she was awarded the Order of Canada during a ceremony in Ottawa.
Fitzpatrick was one of 28 Members invested into the Order of Canada on December 11, along with 1 Companion and 2 officers. 8 Meritorious Service Crosses and 24 Meritorious Service Medals were also presented as part of the Meritorious Service Decorations.
The Order of Canada membership recognizes distinguished service in or to a particular community, group or field of activity.
Fitzpatrick is credited with helping to revitalize the traditional art of rug hooking, elevating Nova Scotia’s standing in the craft. Through her business, publications, educational outreach and designs, Fitzpatrick is a globally-recognized textile artist who shares her expertise worldwide and promotes the history of the craft in the province. Her art, renowned for its vibrant colours and patterns, graces private collections across North America and permanent exhibits in Canadian galleries and museums.
Governor General Mary Simon, in awarding the recipients, said, “today, we celebrate not only your talent, expertise and the years of dedication you’ve invested in building your careers, we also honour all the lives you’ve touched through your work.”
