Two researchers in New Brunswick say rising electricity costs are a serious problem for low-income residents.
The provincial energy board is reviewing N-B Power’s application for a rate hike of nearly five per cent.
Poverty researchers Liam Fisher and Heather Atcheson told the rate hearing that the province should introduce a low-income energy rate for those struggling to make ends meet.
But the utility’s senior vice-president, Darren Murphy, argues it isn’t N-B Power’s — quote — “single accountability” to address customer affordability issues.

Police on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island are investigating a multi-vehicle collision that closed a major roadway for several hours.
Police say a section of Grand Lake Road was shut down just before 9 a-m yesterday after two trucks and two cars crashed.
Fire services helped remove occupants from three heavily damaged vehicles, and all three drivers and one passenger were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
One person was airlifted to Halifax for further treatment, and the driver of the fourth vehicle involved was not injured. (The Canadian Press)

The federal government is committing 16-million dollars towards boosting defence companies in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The government says the money will help develop manufacturing in the province.
Companies include Pal Aerospace, Virtual Marine Technology and CoLab A-I.

Three levels of government are putting a combined 17-million dollars towards wastewater infrastructure near Chester, Nova Scotia.
Officials say the work will include a new wastewater treatment plant in Chester Basin, along with upgrading other aging infrastructure.
The new plant will serve 107 existing homes and allow for the construction of over 600 more in the future.
Ottawa is providing seven-million dollars in funding, the province is spending 5.8-million and the municipality is covering the rest. (The Canadian Press)

Police in Nova Scotia say they arrested three people this week after a traffic stop led to a drug bust.
The R-C-M-P says they and the Halifax Regional Police stopped a vehicle on Highway 102 in Lantz Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation.
They seized cocaine, pills, cash, scales and other drug paraphernalia.
A man and two women are facing trafficking charges, with the man facing additional charges for breaching conditions. (The Canadian Press)

(PEI-Fatal-Crash)
Police on Prince Edward Island say an 81-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash Wednesday.
They say the crash happened on Route 12 near Christopher Cross.
The man, the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital in Summerside, but later died.
R-C-M-P say drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor. (The Canadian Press)
