A Moncton hospital has become the first in New Brunswick to perform a cutting-edge procedure for patients with liver cancer.
Horizon’s Moncton Hospital says the minimally invasive procedure involves blocking the bloody supply to a liver tumour while injecting radioactive glass spheres directly into it.
The hospital’s nuclear medicine supervisor, Crystal Bevans, says the procedure is typically seen as the “gold standard” across Canada for patients with liver cancer and tumours that are not receptive to other treatments.
Bevans says the outpatient treatment aims to shorten hospital stays, reduce patient symptoms and improve quality of life. (The Canadian Press)

The City of Fredericton is aiming to advance its climate action goals by supporting a greener fleet of transit buses.
It’s buying six new hybrid diesel-electric buses to replace aging vehicles over the next two years, a move it says will help to modernize the fleet and reduce emissions.
The cost of each vehicle from New Flyer Bus is an estimated 1.4-million-dollars to be financed over 10 years.
The financing has been approved by the Municipal Capital Borrowing Board. (The Canadian Press)

A New Brunswick woman has been banned from owning pets for 10 years after pleading guilty to failing to provide medical care to a dog.
The New Brunswick S-P-C-A were notified of a dog in need of urgent medical care in Havelock in the spring of last year.
The dog was seized before an investigation led to charges against the Havelock woman under the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
A warrant for the woman’s arrest was later issued by R-C-M-P after she failed to appear for trial last March, before she subsequently pleaded guilty and received a 10-year prohibition order. (The Canadian Press)

A Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, man is facing more than a dozen charges after a weekend incident in Little River Harbour.
R-C-M-P say a man assaulted two people inside a home before leaving in a stolen vehicle once officers arrived.
They say the 25-year-old man was in possession of a replica firearm and returned to the home later where he made threats before setting the house on fire.
He’s facing 18 charges in all, including break and enter, arson, assault with a weapon and uttering threats. (The Canadian Press)

A 58-year-old Halifax man is facing charges as part of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking to homeless people.
The R-C-M-P say three men were arrested on October 9th in an area parking lot before a Lower Sackville home was searched.
The Mounties say officers allegedly seized cocaine, hydromorphone pills, cash, copper wire, and two vehicles.
A 51-year-old Dartmouth man and 41-year-old Halifax man were released but are set to appear in court on a later date. (The Canadian Press)

Rick Mercer’s “Stand-Up for Canada Comedy Tour” will soon be coming to the small screen.
Tonight’s performance in Saint John, New Brunswick, will be recorded for broadcast on C-B-C and C-B-C Gem.
The one-hour special will also feature comics who have been touring with Mercer, Sophie Buddle, Mayce Galoni and Julie Kim.
