Possible final meeting of Sackville town council tonight

Sackville town council meets tonight in what could be their final meeting.

If there are no other lockdowns in the province, the count for May 10 municipal elections will start on May 25, after the last poll closes in Zone 4. That will leave just enough time, in theory, to get a new council oriented and sworn in by their first scheduled meeting on June 7.

Sackville CAO Jamie Burke says the timeline would be very tight. “Right now anything can happen,” says Burke, “so we just need to wait and see how the next few weeks go and take it from there.”

In a report prepared in advance of Monday’s council meeting, Donna Beal and Becky Goodwin of the clerk’s office write, “Once official results are released in the weeks/month ahead, staff will look to schedule dates appropriate to hold the Swearing In Ceremony as well as Council Orientation.”

As for town council’s possible final meeting tonight, the agenda is relatively light. There will be the usual departmental reports, but only a few motions, including two proclamations: one acknowledging May as Rotary Club of Sackville Month and another encouraging participation in the 2021 census.

Council will also be asked to approve a purchase of a plow truck for $356,000 from Applied Pressure Inc. from Saint John.

Council meets tonight at 7pm, via Microsoft Teams, and live streamed on Youtube. There are two question periods for residents to ask questions, one at the begining and one at the end of the meeting.
