A Halifax teenager is still in hospital with a bullet lodged in her body almost a week after shots were fired during the Africville reunion.
Tanya Gray — the cousin of 17-year-old Chrishia (CRY’-eesh-ee-ah) Carvery — said yesterday her relative was one of the five people caught in crossfire on July 27th at the site of the historic Black community — which was demolished in the 60s.
The relative says a bullet is in Carvery’s spine, and that doctors have told family members they cannot remove it at this point because the procedure may cause more damage.
A fundraising campaign was launched this week online, to help the family cope with expenses.

R-C-M-P in the Halifax Regional Municipality and Pictou County are warning of a scam where older victims are being asked to provide money.
Mounties say officers have responded to four complaints of scams where people will ask victims for money under the guise of needing emergency aid.
This is sometimes called the “grandparent scam.”
Mounties say scammers target people by creating a sense of urgency, and recommend that people slow things down and never provide personal details to unfamiliar callers.

Environment Canada says parts of all three Maritime provinces are under heat warnings heading over the long weekend.
Halifax is expecting a high of 26 degrees and a humidex of 34 with a chance of showers today.
New Brunswick is looking at a high of 27 degrees and humidex of 36 today, with a 30 per cent chance of showers.
Today’s forecast in P-E-I will see a high of 28 degrees with a humidex of 36.

Canada’s federal government says it has completed negotiations with the U-S on an agreement for domestic space launches although an agreement is yet to be signed.
The agreement will establish the legal and technical safeguards needed to use U-S space launch technology, expertise and data for launches in Canada.
Maritime Launch Services, which is developing Canada’s first commercial spaceport in the Canso area of northeastern Nova Scotia, says the agreement is a major step forward for the industry.
C-E-O Stephen Matier says his company is preparing for its first orbital launch in 2026.

Kings District R-C-M-P say they have arrested two men from Kentville, Nova Scotia, for unauthorized possession of cannabis products.
A 33-year-old and 27-year-old man were arrested Tuesday after searches at three commercial properties in the New Minas area.
R-C-M-P say they found hundreds of packages of illegal cannabis, tobacco, and vape products, and charged the men under the Cannabis Act.
Both men were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in Kentville Provincial Court on October 30th.

A Labrador man lost his bid for a public hearing about his detainment by police in 2015 at a mental health hospital for a post he made on social media.
A ruling on Thursday by a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Public Complaints Commission says a public hearing would be “desirable,” but Andrew Abbass did not file his complaint against a retired sergeant in time.
Whalen’s decision says Abbass was detained by members of the force in April 2015 and kept for six days at a hospital.
The detainment allegedly occurred because of tweets he wrote in response to the fatal shooting by police that month in St. Mary’s Bay.
