The Green Party’s deputy leader in New Brunswick says that if the party is elected to govern on Monday, it will do more to support family farms.
Kevin Arsenault says changes are needed because farmers are living in poverty and their debt is increasing.
Arsenault says a Green government would set procurement targets for public institutions to buy locally grown food.
As well, he says the Greens would provide financial assistance to small- and medium-sized food production facilities, and introduce reforms focusing on farm diversification.

The Department of National Defence says soldiers in New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador will join forces with local food banks and schools to collect food items.
The 37 Canadian Brigade Group is set to work in both provinces tomorrow to bring supplies to food banks for Operation REPLENISH.
In New Brunswick, people can donate at Sobeys Shediac, No Frills Saint John, and Walmart Regent Mall Fredericton.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, donations will be accepted at Coleman’s in Mt Pearl and at Coleman’s, Sobeys Kelsey Drive, and several Sobeys locations in St John’s.

The Nova Scotia government is offering to pay doctors up to 15 thousand dollars a year for a new retirement benefits program.
Tim Houston says he hopes the public money will keep more physicians in the province.
However, Claudia Chender, leader of the NDP, says the first year cost of 22 million dollars is just a ballpark figure, and she’d like more details.
And Kelly Regan — the Liberal Party health critic — says she wonders whether public funds will go to doctors’ retirement, or if they might just use the contributions for other purposes.

A mayor in Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula is decrying Scotiabank’s decision to shut down its operations in his community.
Rex Matthews says in a Facebook post that the Scotiabank branch in Grand Bank is shutting down permanently today.
The post yesterday says the closure leaves the Burin Peninsula along Newfoundland’s southern coast with just one branch.
The bank said roughly a year ago that the branch in Grand Bank would be one of eight closures across rural Newfoundland, though it did not specify at the time when those closures would be.

An honour guard will be on hand today as P-E-I holds an installation ceremony for its 43rd lieutenant governor.
The ceremony for Dr. Wassim Salamoun will take place at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown.
An honour guard salute will take place at 9:10 a-m on Queen Street prior to the ceremony.
As a result, Queen Street will be closed from Richmond Street to Grafton Street.

A 43-year-old man is facing charges in multiple break and enters and thefts in Bonavista, Newfoundland.
R-C-M-P say they got a report of an attempted break-in on September 29th after the suspect was startled by a neighbour while trying to enter a home.
They allege the same suspect is also linked to two break-ins at gas stations where cigarettes, beer and lottery tickets were stolen.
The man was arrested October 9th and his charges include break and enter, mischief and breach of probation.
