Dieppe, New Brunswick recently opened its second milkweed garden to help dwindling monarch butterfly populations get better food access.
Heavy pesticide use and low milkweed numbers are among reasons for dwindling monarch butterfly populations.
University of New Brunswick researcher Stephen Heard says monarch butterflies eat only milkweed.
He says more plants are needed on the butterflies’ migration route to Mexico to keep the population up. (CBC News)

NS-Climate-Funding) Communities that are losing out on bids for federal help to protect against climate change say they are left wondering where to pursue funds to keep their towns safe.
Eighty-nine-year-old Dave Davies is a volunteer with the Hall’s Harbour Community Development Association.
He says it was hard to learn earlier this summer that Ottawa’s Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund had rejected his Nova Scotia town’s bid for 4.8-million dollars.
The funding was to be used to strengthen seawalls and build a breakwater, while extending a wharf in the Annapolis Valley community. (The Canadian Press)

A federal fisheries department scientist is dead following a plane crash near Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador.
A fisheries department spokesperson says three scientists were on board a chartered flight on a trip to survey marine animals when the crash happened around 11:30 a-m on Friday.
The surviving passengers, two scientists and the pilot, are injured following the crash.
D-F-O says all aerial surveillance flights planned for the mission have been suspended. (The Canadian Press)

The union representing workers at Atlantic Canada news company SaltWire is acknowledging that job cuts are coming after a sale to Postmedia was approved in court.
C-W-A Canada says in a letter to its members it negotiated that some money owed by SaltWire to the Chronicle Herald pension plan would be paid.
The letter confirms the Chronicle Herald’s pension plan will be wound up according to pension plan legislation.
The union says the collective agreements and bargaining rights will continue for operations acquired by Postmedia. (The Canadian Press)

A Dartmouth, Nova Scotia animal rescue has reached its shelter capacity after taking in 24 cats and kittens from one home.
The head of Bide Awhile Animal Shelter Society in Dartmouth says it’s expected that the owner of the young cats was hoarding them until it became too much to handle.
Almost all of the 24 are kittens and were in need of immediate veterinary care.
Sam Cole, a spokesperson for shelter, says there are another 60 cats in and around the same home that are in less urgent need of intervention. (CBC News)

An Olympic athlete who trained in Nova Scotia won gold this weekend during the final full day of Olympic events in Paris.
Twenty-eight-year-old Katie Vincent won a gold medal after a photo finish in the women’s 200-metre sprint canoe final on Saturday.
She crossed the finish line with a world-record time of 44.12 seconds.
Vincent also earned a bronze medal with canoe partner Sloan MacKenzie from Windsor Junction, Nova Scotia, in the 500-metre sprint canoe final Friday. (The Canadian Press)
