The provincial fire duty officer in Newfoundland and Labrador is hoping for more firefighters and more rain to combat the wild fires in western Labrador.
This as Labrador City has declared a state of emergency due to the issue of wildfires.
George Gibbons said yesterday that the rainfall of between 50 to 100 millimetres was needed to thoroughly douse the fire that has resulted in the evacuation of Labrador City.
As of yesterday there was an initial forecast for 10 to 15 millimetres.

(NB-Maple-Producer-Insurance)
New Brunswick is introducing an insurance program aimed at protecting maple producers in the province while attracting others.
The Agri-Insurance program will allow maple producers to buy insurance protection from production losses caused by natural harms like extreme weather.
New Brunswick’s Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries department already offers Agri-Insurance programs for a number of other producers, including apples, grain, grain corn, oilseeds and potatoes.
Those who take part in the program will share premium costs with the provincial and federal governments.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
It says northeastern, central, and southern New Brunswick could see hot and humid weather through Wednesday with temperatures climbing to 30 degrees today.
The weather agency says all of Nova Scotia could see the mercury reach up to 31 degrees Celsius today with a humidex or feels like value of 39.
P-E-I forecasts indicate temperatures of up to 31 degrees today with a humidex value of around 39.

Police in Nova Scotia are investigating a collision that left a 63-year-old man dead.
They say officers responded to a report of a collision between a motorcycle and an S-U-V pulling a trailer near the intersection of Forties Road and Barrs Corner Road, around 4:45 p-m on Sunday.
Police say the 63-year-old motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no injuries to the two people in the S-U-V.

B-C’s premier says he wants to support Newfoundland and Labrador’s efforts to sue Ottawa over the federal equalization program.
David Eby told reporters in Halifax following a Council of the Federation meeting Monday he is continually frustrated by the equalization formula that puts British Columbia taxpayers at a disadvantage.
On May 30th, Newfoundland and Labrador said it would be filing a constitutional challenge against Ottawa over the equalization program that they called unfair to the province that qualified for payments this year for the first time since 2008.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government contends the equalization formula is flawed, and that it could have received between 450 million and 1.2 billion in each of the last five years instead of receiving nothing.

Correctional Service of Canada says a medium security federal prison in Springhill, Nova Scotia, has been placed on lockdown.
A news release says the lockdown on Thursday helped staff conduct — what it is calling — an “exceptional” search.
The agency says the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.
It says all visits have been suspended until the search is complete.

Correctional Service of Canada says an inmate has died while in custody at the Springhill prison in Nova Scotia.
Charles Mangapi died on Saturday.
Mangapi was serving a two-year-seven-month sentence for two counts of motor vehicle theft and sexual interference of a person under 16 since June 7th this year.
No cause for the death was given.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is distributing one thousand dollars payments in one-time emergency financial assistance to households ordered to evacuate their home in Labrador City as a result of wildfires.
Public Safety minister John Hogan announced the assistance today at the Confederation Building yesterday.
To access this assistance, people must be registered with the Red Cross, which will verify eligibility.
Registration for this one-time emergency financial assistance will close on July 31st.
