A wildfire that’s forced the evacuation of a central Labrador town continued to hold relatively steady as of yesterday.
The province’s forest fire duty officer Mark Lawlor says firefighters are continuing to attack the blaze near Churchill Falls.
Lawlor says the approximately 15-square-kilometre fire gained a small amount of ground to the south.
The town was evacuated Wednesday as a rapidly growing wildfire appeared ready to jump the Churchill River and head for the town only six kilometres away.

Police in New Brunswick say two 17-year-old boys have been charged in connection with a stabbing that killed a 71-year-old man.
Fredericton police say they responded to a call about an ongoing fight Friday evening and officers found a victim who had been critically injured from a stabbing.
Three suspects were arrested, including two 17-year-old youths, who are facing second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.
A 15-year-old boy was also arrested but has since been released.

Premier Blaine Higgs has issued a statement about the death of James K. Irving, saying the billionaire businessman from New Brunswick left an indelible mark on the province.
Irving’s family confirmed late Friday he had died in Saint John at the age of 96.
Higgs says Irving, the chairman of J-D Irving helped his father, K-C Irving, and his two brothers — Arthur and Jack — build a business empire.
The premier says James Irving was unwavering in his belief in New Brunswick and was proud to say his company was based in Saint John. (The Canadian Press)

R-C-M-P in New Brunswick are seeking help from the public to locate a man accused of assaulting a woman with a weapon during a home invasion.
Police responded to a report of a break-and-enter early yesterday morning in East Brighton.
Police say a 35-year-old man named Bon Trecartin allegedly assaulted and threatened the woman at the home and fled when she called 9-1-1.
The man is known to police and is considered dangerous.

The Halifax Y-W-C-A says its funds designed to help survivors of gender-based violence flee abuse are depleted as demand for help is up.
The director of the Y-W-C-A in Halifax says it has supported 181 survivors and has given out 125-thousand-dollars so far this year.
This money goes toward paying rent and other costs that come with fleeing a violent situation.
The organization is hoping community donations will help the Y-W-C-A make up the shortfall.

Firefighters say no one was injured in a fire that gutted a townhouse in the Halifax area this weekend.
District fire chief Rob Hebb says firefighters from multiple departments responded to the blaze at the triplex Saturday night.
Hebb says crews were able to bring the fire under control by around 8:30 p-m, and all of the building’s occupants were accounted for.
