The federal government is ending the northern cod moratorium off the north and east coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador after more than 30 years.
The government says it is re-establishing a commercial northern cod fishery with a total allowable catch of 18-thousand tonnes for the 2024 season.
Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier called it a historic milestone for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
The federal government closed the fishery in 1992 in a bid to protect dwindling stocks, putting tens of thousands of people out of work and accelerating rapid outmigration from the province’s rural communities.

(NS-Armed-Man-Arrested)
Nova Scotia police arrested an armed man in a rural area of Lunenburg County early today after issuing an emergency alert in the area.
R-C-M-P said in an 8:28 a.m. alert the man was carrying a firearm and on foot in an area about 40 kilometres north of Bridgewater.
Twelve minutes later they issued a follow up release saying the man had been arrested and there was no longer a threat to the public.
The alert said the man had been spotted on Barss Corner Road, in Lunenburg County, about 40 kilometres north of Bridgewater.

(NB-Fatal-Crash)
R-C-M-P in New Brunswick say a 52-year-old man has died following a vehicle crash.
They say officers responded to a call of a single all-terrain vehicle crash on Highway 790, near Chance Harbour around 7:30 p-m on Monday.
They say the driver and only occupant of the all-terrain vehicle died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Police say they believe the crash happened when the driver of the all-terrain vehicle, travelling southbound, lost control, went off the road and hit a telephone pole.

(NS-Wanted-Man)
Police say a man wanted in the United States has been arrested in Newfoundland and Labrador.
They say the man was arrested after a warrant was issued on Friday following a request by the United States Marshalls Service to Canada.
They say he is wanted in the United States for violation of probation conditions in relation to conviction on sexual offences involving a minor.
Police say the man is scheduled to appear in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador today.

(NB-Nursing-Home)
New Brunswick says a 60-bed nursing home is to be built in Bathurst.
A news release says the home will be built and operated by Comfort Life Network, which already operates several nursing homes across the province.
It says beds were originally announced as part of the 2018-2023 Nursing Home Plan.
No details were given on when the nursing home will be built. (The Canadian Press)

(NL-Labrador-Fires) (Watch for dating)Â
A wildfire in Labrador has jumped the Churchill River, prompting the evacuation of remaining staff at the nearby hydroelectric generating station.
The river had acted as a natural fire break ever since the wildfire broke out on June 13th, but yesterday the fire crossed over.
The roughly 750 residents of the community were ordered out earlier as the fire approached, while a skeleton staff initially remained at the hydro facility.
However, as of yesterday, the 100 people that remained at the station in Labrador and Quebec were ordered to leave, and parts of the plant will now be operated remotely.

(NB-Indigenous-Dance)
The Atlantic Ballet of Canada will launch a two-year Indigenous dance program in Moncton, New Brunswick this fall.
Eight Indigenous dancers in Grade 11 will be accepted to train close to their communities and culture.
The director of Indigenous programs at the ballet says there are no professional training programs in Atlantic Canada, adding this initiative is filling an important gap.
Ottawa and the Ulnooweg Indigenous Communities Foundation are investing a combined total of 450-thousand dollars to support the program.
