Yesterday afternoon a ceremony in eastern Nova Scotia to marked the start of construction for North America’s first coastal refuge for whales retired from marine theme parks.
The U-S-based Whale Sanctuary Project vice president said the ceremony marked a significant milestone of moving on from all of the years of the regulatory review.
The project first announced plans to build a 40-hectare floating net enclosure near Wine Harbour more than six years ago.
In October, Premier Tim Houston’s cabinet approved a 20-year Crown lease for the project, but the lease has yet to be signed.

Dog owners in Halifax, Nova Scotia are being reminded to keep a leash on their dogs– unless a sign indicates otherwise.
The Halifax Regional Municipality says it’s noting an uptick in serious dog attacks and growing concerns from residents about unsafe interactions.
Local councillors have cited high-profile attacks in meetings like the January 3rd death of 13-year-old in Shelburne County after they attacked by a Rottweiler and two cane Corso dogs.
Earlier this year, Halifax called on the province to pass legislation that defines dangerous dogs and create a system for jurisdictions to share information.
