The province’s auditor general has found the government of Prince Edward Island is spending significantly more on capital building projects than initially budgeted.
The report by the Office of the Auditor General reviewed a sample of 12 capital building projects costing more than two-million-dollars total since 2020.
Auditors found all but one project exceeded their original estimate, with total costs growing from 81.5-million-dollars to 150.6 million.
The department says capital spending is a key contributor to the province’s net debt with around 65 per cent of the 2026-2027 capital budget allocated to new capital building projects.
