Newfoundland and Labrador’s justice and public safety minister is touring R-C-M-P detachments in Labrador to meet with Indigenous and community leaders.

Helen Conway Ottenheimer is travelling with Pat Cahill, commanding officer with the R-C-M-P, to discuss policing needs and how the R-C-M-P can better serve the region.

The minister will also meet with representatives from the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The government says direct feedback from residents is key to improving public safety and strengthening communities across the province. (The Canadian Press)

Fredericton Police say they arrested three people this week during a Direct Action Response Team operation, for offences including open-air drug use and theft from a vehicle.

Police say another operation last week led to seven arrests, five warrant executions and the seizure of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, prescription pills and a large knife.

The team has made 30 arrests over the past two months, executed 18 warrants, seized illegal drugs and weapons, recovered stolen property and closed three repeat offender files.

The unit says it will continue targeting open-air drug use, street crime and repeat offenders. (The Canadian Press)

(NB-Police-Fire)

New Brunswick R-C-M-P say officers accidentally caused a house fire during a standoff on Kingsclear First Nation last year.

Police say a tear-gas canister ignited inside the home during the operation, but the fire was not disclosed publicly at the time.

Last year’s news release about the incident only said firefighters and public safety officials attended the scene.

Mounties say the tear gas was used after a barricaded man allegedly fired a weapon — he was later arrested and charged.

R-C-M-P say they are eager to speak with anyone who knows anything about a 2025 wildfire in northeastern Newfoundland that destroyed dozens of homes and left many people with nothing.

Adam Palmer, the Mounties’ officer in charge of investigative support services in Newfoundland and Labrador, says the fire is considered suspicious, and the force’s major crimes unit is leading the investigation.

He told reporters in St. John’s the team has investigated and cleared a number of people, but no arrests have been made and the force has not yet confirmed whether arson was involved.

Palmer says investigators believe there may be people — even witnesses — with key information who haven’t yet spoken to police, and he urged them to come forward.

Nova Scotia is marking the third annual Acadian Heritage Month this August, celebrating more than 400-years of Acadian language, culture and traditions.

Acadian Affairs Minister Colton LeBlanc says the month recognizes the lasting contributions Acadians make across the province.

This year’s theme is “Building connections, celebrating our voices.”

More than 20 community events are planned, including concerts, cultural activities and culinary experiences.
