While a report emerges that province faces future power shortfalls
Tonight, the Municipality of Tantramar holds its regular council meeting at 7 p.m. in Sackville Council Chambers. The agenda includes a discussion around the proposed 500-megawatt natural-gas and diesel plant near Centre Village – part of a billion-dollar deal between NB Power and U.S.-based ProEnergy.
According to Local Journalism Initiative Reporter John Chilibeck for the Telegraph-Journal, Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton pressed NB Power officials last week over the secrecy of the agreement and its cost. The utility acknowledged the project’s estimated $1 billion price tag but said details remain confidential for proprietary reasons.
In tonight’s meeting agenda, under a ‘Public and Administrative Presentation’ heading, “PROENERGY CANADA – J. MACISAAC is set to present during the meeting. Since the project was announced in mid-July, there has been growing resistance with residents and environmental groups questioning its impact on wetlands and wildlife corridors along the Chignecto Isthmus. More than 700 members are now active in the Stop the Tantramar Gas Plant Facebook group. CHMA News previously spoke to MacIsaac in July, 2025.
Also according to Chilibeck for The Daily Gleaner – NB Power has warned that New Brunswick could face electricity shortfalls as early as 2028. The utility says growing demand and aging infrastructure mean new generation sources are urgently needed – a challenge that’s helping drive the push for projects like the Tantramar plant.
The meeting is open to the public and livestreamed through the municipality’s website.
Council is also expected to address other planning and infrastructure updates.
