Canada opened its Davis Cup tie against Israel in an empty Scotiabank Centre in Halifax due to security concerns.

Tennis Canada made the decision earlier this week to hold the matches without spectators or media present, following concerns raised by local authorities and other security agencies about safety.

Several activist groups protested the matches today and plan to do so again tomorrow over Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in the Israel-Hamas war.

Play began with Canada’s Gabriel Diallo taking on Israel’s Daniel Cukierman.

(NB-SiRT-Shediac-Arrest)

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) will not be laying charges against a New Brunswick R-C-M-P officer following the death of a man during an arrest in Shediac.

The agency says there was no wrongdoing when an officer fired a Taser-like weapon in a struggle with a man behaving erratically during a service call in May.

A report says officers first encountered the individual in a bathroom with broken glass, large amounts of blood, and drug paraphernalia.

After hit with the energy weapon, the man was transported to hospital by ambulance, but died the following day.

Two men are facing charges after illegally netting Atlantic salmon near King’s Point in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Resource enforcement officers say the accused used a gillnet attached to a wharf and were seen the next morning retrieving the net using a boat.

The pair are facing Fisheries Act charges for setting fishing gear during a closed time, fishing for salmon by means of a net, and possession of salmon caught in contravention of the Fisheries Act.

The investigation also led to the seizure of a boat, net, and 10 Atlantic salmon. (The Canadian Press)
