(Statcan-Inflation-August)
The Atlantic provinces had some of the highest rates of inflation in Canada during August.
Statistics Canada reports prices accelerating in Nova Scotia, P-E-I and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Overall, Canada’s inflation rate held steady at three per cent, suggesting higher energy costs have yet to significantly spill over into broader consumer prices.
Consumers found some relief at the grocery store as food prices rose more slowly than overall inflation for the first time since July 2024, climbing 2.8 per cent year-over-year. (The Canadian Press)

A member of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Progressive Conservative party has gone independent.
Keith Russell — who represents Labrador’s Lake Melville district — did not say why he was leaving the governing party, but said he had to listen to his conscience and put his constituents first.
That leaves the Progressive Conservatives with half of the 40 seats in the legislature.
The party still retains a working majority government because the Speaker — also an independent lawmaker– does not vote unless there is a tie. (The Canadian Press)
