The government of Nova Scotia spent a record 1.9-billion-dollars outside of the budget process in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The extra spending was not included in the budget, but was approved by cabinet without a vote of the legislature.
The province closed the year with a record-high deficit of 1.4-billion.
Finance Minister John Lohr says there are plenty of reasons why the Progressive Conservatives needed the flexibility to overspend.
Some of the money covered the 40.4-million-dollar cost of public works projects as well as 13.8-million spent on the 2025 wildfire season. (The Canadian Press)

The University of New Brunswick has been removed from the defamation lawsuit of a U-S state senator who received a doctorate for his research there in 2013.
Pennsylvania’s Doug Mastriano accused U-N-B and nearly two dozen academics of defamation, racketeering, antitrust and other claims in a lawsuit launched in 2024.
The case was launched in response to criticism of Mastriano’s academic research into American First World War hero, Sgt. Alvin York.
The university successful argued that it was immune from the jurisdiction of the U-S district court in western Oklahoma because it is an “organ of a foreign state.” (The Canadian Press)

New Brunswick R-C-M-P are reminding the public about the rules surrounding the use of electric dirt bikes.
The Mounties say they’re not considered bicycles under the province’s Motor Vehicle Act, noting many are capable of reaching speeds of at least 70 kilometres per hour.
This can pose a safety risk to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
Mounties say they are not permitted on streets, highways, sidewalks, parks, walking trails or school grounds. (The Canadian Press)
