(NB-Police-Harassment)

The association that represents municipal police in New Brunswick says members of the Saint John Police Force have filed nine harassment complaints against Chief Robert Bruce.

The New Brunswick Police Association says the complaints have been filed with the New Brunswick Police Commission and are also before the courts.

The association did not release any details about the nature of the complaints.

The Saint John Police Force has said it won’t comment on the complaints because it does not want to interfere with a judicial process

Police in eastern Newfoundland are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a collision between a police patrol vehicle and an S-U-V.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the two vehicles were badly damaged when they collided early yesterday in the north end of St. John’s just before 1 a-m.

Investigators say the S-U-V’s 59-year-old male driver and 47-year-old male passenger were sent to hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries — and the male officer went to hospital as a precaution.

Collision analysts are seeking any witnesses or video footage from the area.

(PEI-Name-Change)

Residents of a small P-E-I community known as Savage Harbour are being asked to help the provincial government choose a new name for their area and the nearby bay.

The government issued a statement yesterday saying the move is part of an initiative to remove derogatory place names.

The geographical naming advisory committee will lead the process, and its members include residents and community representatives.

Community meetings will be held in October, November and December, during which new names can be submitted — and a vote will be held to select a new name for the bay and the community.

Nova Scotia’s Opposition New Democrats say the province should pay for free contraception for those who need it.

N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender says its time for Nova Scotia to follow the lead of British Columbia, P-E-I, Yukon and Manitoba.

Chender says the Progressive Conservative government led by The Houston has yet to take federal funding for free birth control.

She says that limits health-care options and costs people an average of 300 dollars per year.

(NL-Canada-Post)

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liberal Leader John Hogan says the federal government should halt any changes to mail delivery before consulting with the provinces.

Hogan says rural and remote post offices must stay open in the province.

The federal government says Canada Post will reduce the frequency of door-to-door letter mail delivery in an effort to shore up its finances.

Four million Canadians will also see their service switch from door-to-door delivery to a community mailbox model, and some post offices will be closed for good.
