(NB-Throne-Speech)

New Brunswick’s Liberal government is set to give its throne speech this afternoon.

Instead of focusing on health care, education and housing, Premier Susan Holt said yesterday she was forced to divert her attention to the effects of U-S tariffs in her first year in office.

Trump recently imposed a 10 per cent tariff on lumber that together with anti-dumping and countervailing duties of just over 35 per cent, bringingimport taxes for Canadian softwood lumber entering the U-S to more than 45 per cent.

The tariff on softwood lumber, Holt says, risks dropping the province’s G-D-P by 0.5 per cent and could put more than one thousand people out of work.

The population had experienced a steady decline from a recent high of 500 animals in 2011 to a low of 359 in 2020.

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust says a large island off the province’s southwest coast will be permanently protected from development.

The conservation group says the protection of Cape LaHave Island in the Municipality of Lunenburg is a bid deal because it is one of the largest islands ever conserved in the province.

The group says the 10-square-kilometre island will continue to be available for low-impact community recreational activities.

Cape LaHave Island is Nova Scotia’s fifth largest island.
